Discussion Why Do So Many Members Never Post? Let’s Talk!

Bruce,

I don’t build Tall Ships either and don’t plan to. I don’t like copying what everyone else is doing. My collection includes Several New York Pilot Boats, several Navy ships boats, a US Navy Passaic Class Monitor and now a Great Lakes Freighter. All scratch built. The idea that the ultimate ship modeling achievement is a Nelson era sailing warship with rows of cannons is nonsense. Ship models should be judged on their own regardless of subject.

I would love to see photos of your destroyer models. Modeling these complex vessels presents challenges all their own. How well you overcome them is your mark of success.

Roger

The views that a build log receives are totalled up on the forum index. Does this figure include guests as well as members?

... only registered members.

I’m astonished. I have always assumed that the majority of those thousands of people who viewed my build threads on this and similar forums were unable to tip me a ‘like’ or type a word. Now that I know that they were simply unwilling, or actively disliked what they had viewed, I feel a little queasy.

Why do those who NEVER post ever want to join a social network? I suppose that since it’s free, easy, and membership confers a slight advantage in the viewing of images, there is a small practical gain for the outlay of ten minutes spent signing up.

I wonder whether there’s also a psychological pay off in imagining themselves a part of the community?

Here’s a few more point to ponder. How many of them never return to the forum? Indeed given our average age, how many are still extant? Some build threads have posts so widely spaced that maybe the never-posters simply haven’t gotten around to it yet? Perhaps they are simply too busy?

Search me! All these points are unanswerable. We shall never know because the moment they post an answer to these questions, they cease to be ‘never-posters’. ROTF

I’ve noticed over time that quite a few folks register here, but never post—or maybe only write one or two messages and then go quiet.
I understand that not everyone wants to jump right in, and that’s perfectly okay, but I’m genuinely curious: What keeps new members from posting more? Is it nerves? Not sure where to start? Concern about experience level? Language? Something else?

No pressure at all, but if you’re reading this and haven’t said much (or anything), this is your invitation to chime in. Even a “Hi, I’m here” is enough to get going. We all started somewhere, and we’re glad you’re here.
well, I'm here! The reason I don't post often here, is because I'm taking a small break from scale-modeling as a whole, and working more on my photography skills (Mainly planetary-photography stuff). Not only that, but I'm working on honing my art-skills more, to become more skilled & better at drawing.

So if someone hesitates to post because they feel their work doesn’t “measure up,” I’d say this: your build might be exactly what someone else needs to see. Not to compare, but to relate, to learn from, and to feel encouraged.

Sharing your progress, questions, or challenges doesn’t make you “less than” - it makes you part of the community.
Well said, Jim. That’s why I made it Bold and Italic.
Regards, Peter

Yeah ... there's no doubt about me.

As for myself, I am in awe of what you pro's do with your models. The deep think of scale, scale, scale. You guys make your own rope. Kidding me. I enjoy this sight so much, but I am intimidated to post what little I have accomplished. Perhaps I should throw it out there and get a good laugh. I think my best accomplishment was tearing off five old sails from my old USS Connie and making my own sails. I now have 16 sails on her and I feel great about it. I am trying to achieve my first wood ship and feel pretty good about it. Started from deck down. Failure is not an option, till the Grand Kids get here and destroy whatever they can hide, misplace or destroy. Guess I still love them. For now.

That is a quote from Abraham Lincoln. I use it a lot.

Dale, it looks like you've been around the forum enough to notice that no one laughs at anyone's work. On the contrary, I've found nothing but good will and encouragement here. There may be some unsolicited suggestions for improvement and if you ask for help, be prepared for a flood of answers, but no one will laugh or make fun. Everyone here had to develop their skills through practice, so keep practicing and share. :D

That's true! I'm generally more interested in the guys who struggle with an old worn file and a few sandpapers, inventing odd techniques to amend their short tool inventories while working on their first models, than some demi-gods producing their masterpieces in well provided an professional workshops, whose skills keep on representing me a mistery even after decades.

hahahaha all the kung fu and fortune cookies cant explain or justify why people don't participate.

the idea of likes is mearly a feel good token of appreciation. you participate to share experiance and knowledge with like minded people who agree with your offerings but dont feel dissapointed for not getting these accolades.... its not a popularity contest.

as for the lurkers, maybe they are learning or just curious to see if this hobby may be something they would enjoy trying and arent ready to commit?

as i said, dont take it personally. just enjoy what we all share in here as participants... we are documenting an almost extinct hobby in this day of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. have you noticed how few actually have hobbies anymore?

Jim, bem interessante sua abordagem e eu me encaixo neste perfil.
