Here is drawings of a Windlass for a merchant vessel 300 tons 1796 ish.

It is interesting regarding the 2 pawls.
The draught of "Adventure" shows a windlass with what appears to be 2 pawls. Only 1 can be seen in the plan view.
The ratchet would be 8 sided.
Here is my idea of what is shown. The2 pawls would act as if the ratchet had 16 sides.
