The start of yet another build log !
After my vacation on the East Coast and seeing several tall ships in Newport RI and Boston MA, I decided to purchase Ed's Young America Series. My other two current builds, as many of you know, are based on Ancre Monographs and will be completed Admiralty Style (without masting and rigging). After studying Ed's books I just had to to jump in and try some of his innovative techniques. Some of them include building upright without a jig by using movable gantrys and squares mounted to t tracks on the build board, pre beveled frame construction which reduces much of the need of the tedious fairing of the exterior and interior, working with lathes for fittings, soldering and an entire volume on rigging. Best of all every diagram referenced is printable either in download or off an included CD on 8 by 11 and 1/2 paper which eliminates the need to go to my local UPS store to make endless copies. And best of all plans and diagrams are CAD - so no surprises later.
Frankly I am shocked I have not seen a build log for this model in either POB and Plank on Frame (other than one from a gentleman in Sweden that has been dormant). Its truly a gorgeous vessel with spectacular lines. I will continue to work on my other builds, but for the next few months I want to get this one off the ground.
Attached is the construction site per Ed's instruction - 3/4 inch Melamine with Tracks sunk to receive the jigs later required for construction. The hull is approx 41 inches and fully rigged will be much larger. Certainly scaling down to 1/72 should be interesting after working most recently on a smaller vessel in the much larger scale of 1/36 !
