Hms Alert by Maarten [COMPLETED BUILD]

All 6 have their Jimsky barrels in place.
ROTF But graphite treatment is not my trick, and all credit should go to @janos who suggested it in one of his posts. I do like it and happily using.

The gun assembly looks very good and perfectly matches your model! I like it a lot! Thumbs-Up

Haha, we are all the same monkeys, just copying what somebody else already did, we call that evolution :).

In Holland we have a saying "beter goed gejat dan slecht bedacht" which translates into something like: better stolen well then badly conceived. :)

Is there somewhere a description of this method? The result is looking very promising, especially if I am thinking on resin casted gus.

Now I am finalizing the model I am digging in the carton box to see which parts still need to be installed.

One of these items is the SB anchor.
After burnishing, brushing with graphite, burning treenails and treating the anchor stock with clou and afterwards bitumen this the result.

On to the bowsprit. The bow sprit is adjustable and has three different holes to lock it, this according the aots book. The kit had only one hole so I added two. The bow sprit was treated with Clou and bitumen.

From remaining pewter casting strips I made bars to lock the bow sprit.

And put it in place.

To join the top with the bottom the stump mast is fitted.
The lower part of the mast is tappered and a square is cut into the foot to fit the mast step.

And colour it with bitumen.

The last one for today is I prepared some spokes for the winch. Made from some left over strip.

We are getting realy close to the end of this build.
Just a few more posts and this lovely kit will be finished.

Marten,
Your build is just beautiful! I don't have any references, but would the spokes for the winch be somewhat rounded to make them easier and more comfortable to grip?

That's right. Antscherl shows it clearly in all his issues.

My friend - just opened your log after one week absense
Great details - now it is really the period of big fun, when you are able to add the prepared sub-projects and add all the details
Your guns are great - and also the other parts
Only one detail I would like to mention:
On the fluke you have still the small edge which happened during the casting - I would sand it away and blacken it once more

Thx gents for your comments, much appreciated.
I didn't had any reference on it and the aots book only shows the side of the spokes so I took the easy route and kept them square. Btw the capstan spokes on royal caroline are octogonal.

@albertmary if Antscherl pictures them round then I go for that, so creating 0,4 mm round spokes with square ends to fit in the windlass.

@Uwe, macro images and light increase the effect enormously, in reality with the naked eye nearly impossible to see.
See below picture with flash.

Baby steps towards the end of this build. The SB bower anchor finds its finall place on the SB bow.
20230201_200943.jpg
The ropes are made from Gutermann Mara poly and coloured with turpentine diluted bitumen of judea.

On the inside of the hull. I love how the poly rope handles, you can easily shape it the way you want

The cat head block and anchor cable fitted. The anchor cable is the kit supplied cotton. All the other ropes I made myself. The anchor rope I still need to remove some of the fuzz.

And an overview

The breach ropes for the guns are next on the list.
Again made from Gutermann Mara 220 coloured with bitumen.
I fitted the breach ropes with rings and rig bolts, eye splices etc before glueing the ring bolts into the bullwark.

Also the railing rope is fitted.
