Recently opened the first pack from D Agostini's HMS Victory kit and was really saddened by all the warped parts that make up the false keel and ribs. I know the kit used to be produced by AL but since they no longer are in business who's making the kit's? Also, is there any news from Amati about their long awaited 1/64 kit of Victory? Here's a pick of one of the frames.

Well - I cant comment on the credibility or legality of the photos or post on Facebook - except to say they were posted by Amati - not James

May apologies Pat and everyone else. I was referring to the name of the person who posted, not Amati.

Well that's interesting news! I would hope it's more than just a fake Facepage post. It would be nice to have Victory in 1/64.

The CC kit is ALL ply & real wood. The Amati looks to be MDF creeping in as their other recent kits have been doing. If I'm going to be spending high end money for a kit, I expect it to be of quality material, not "Oh we re keeping the cost down and its just as good!!!"

I dont see MDF in the Asian & Russian kits

The old Amati would be good wood, but the new seems to be substituting quality for profit.
The quality of the CC part on the other hand is exceptional.

They are all cost cutting these days and MDF whilst somewhat sound at 8-10 mm. at 6 or less less is very prone to lateral damage and cannot sustain hard knocks on edging. Unlike ply, try sucessfully gluing a broken mdf part together with PVA!

It can be a MAJOR disaster if it gets wet and is normally bound with dangerous glues. Try soaking some MDF *& bending ( DONT unless you want wood mache)

WORKPLACE use mandates dust protection for mouth, lungs and eyes when cuting & sanding. Having no grain it sands well to shape, but also splits or cracks if nailed.

It also causes havoc with dirt buildup on laser lenses.

It is a very cheap alternative to wood and is normally veneered over. Is is good at thick levels ( 12mm or more) but very heavy & dense.

It is not a structural product.

As to the Diagostini Victory - Modelspace should be able ot supply parts as they sell it as a complete kit ( at less the price of the subscription) as well as partwork.

Great explanation Paul. As a professional fabricator myself, I 100% agree with everything you stated regarding MDF. It has it's uses but not to the degree being used in some cases. It really is not structural, very prone to water damage, and not good cut thin. I hate cutting it on my laser!!
