I’d like to present to you another nice Kit designed by Shicheng Model (SC Model Co., Ltd.; Hangzhou) a few years ago:

Marmara Trade Boat (16 – 19th century), a trade ship along the Ottoman Bosporus, scale 1:48
01.jpg
I really love those little ships, that you might still see sailing not only in the Marmara Sea, but also in the Aegean Sea doing little cargo or fishing. Their original dimensions are about 15m long, almost 4m wide and about 2m deep. The ship has a deck at the bow and aft with small storage rooms underneath. As the hull is both wide and heavy, her main keel has two additional auxiliary keels to reduce possible hull damage when docking or landing.
She carries up to six sails in total and a flag on her mainmast.
Bow, stern, rudder and tiller are colorful decorated.
It is a mix of POB and POF, for the hidden parts under the decks there are 10 bulkheads, the open middle area is formed by 22 ribs.
02.jpg

All items are nicely packed and wrapped in cellophane.
03.jpg

The round bars and strips are all straight.
04.jpg
Blocks, Deadeyes and Rack-Beads are quite nice, the ropes aren’t that glossy in nature.
05.jpg
As it is a “trade boat”, there are some extra goods in the box: pots, wooden chests and barrels.
06.jpg
07.jpg
Etched parts: hinges and hull decoration
08.jpg
Bulkheads and building berth are plywood, Ribs and other parts cherry
09.jpg

No idea what Wood “Tochigi” is, but the planking is also lasercut and preshaped:
12.jpg
The Instructions are … chinese … lots of pictures and “step by step” photos:

15.jpg16.jpg

It is about € 150,- via ebay so I thought I’d give it a try … who knows when Tridents Alert really will hit Europe ;)
I might try a build log on her, but as you can see I'm not that good with my camera...
but I think she is such a lovely boat, I had to share her with you ;)

Hallo Markus,
many thanks for this interesting review -
Please do not hesitate to start a building log!!! As you know we like photos and this independent of the quality of the photos - only important is the modeling work shown on the photos

Hi. Are you building this ship ?

Thanks !
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

unfortunately not - at least for the time being ;)

Thank you for your fast answer. I bought the same kit and I was curious to know how you manage the ribs sanding.

I am accumulating courage to do it.

It is really a very pretty model kit but never did POF work.

Thank you again and have a nice day !!!
Daniel

I was curious to know how you manage the ribs sanding.

yes, thats one of the things that did hold me back from starting ... "very carefully" could be the "short" answer ;)

the ribs are quite fragile (just 2x2 mm profile), but have laser-marks for bevels, overlapping, etc.

I found a quite informative building log on 4hmodel - no (ok, little) problems to read / follow with the automatic translation in Chrome!
I also translated the dokumentation already (to German), if you want it, pm me!

Thank you for your help and info !!!

I will take my time to read/translate the link you sent me.

Concerning the kit instructions, they are in Chinese and English.

Well.... let me think if I start this kit. I am finishing the AL Red Dragon. Now I have to install the masts and my wife have to sew all the ship sails as I don't know how to sew a button :) . I can do all that slowly and jump start the Marmara.... Love it, but those ribs scare me too.

Stay tune. I will need your help/comments.

Have a nice day !
Daniel

Hi mstritzl
thanks for this interesting review, Thumbsup
I would love to read and follow the blog,
I will continue to follow :)

Lucky you! Mine where only Chinese ... beside of the part-numbers ...
Do you think you might be able to scan and PM the english part me? There are still 2, 3 parts I am not completly sure of ...

It is a great looking boat (to me), but I think I'll dive into PoF with the Alert or LeCoureur, I am hoping for lots of logs to learn from! ;)

Also I can post pictures for you, and anybody else, to download. They are just a few pages. Let me check.

Cheers

My berth is the new design :

Also ZHL Model sell this decoration carved in wood:

20200731_132705.jpg

I am so scare of unpacking that decoration. Max (ZHL MODEL) told me to sand very smoothly the background to take out that extra wood. He wrote "do not use the knife or you will brake it". Men... this is a stressful hobby... LOL. :) :D;)

Let me know if you were able to save those pictures for your future reference.

Cheers
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

many thanks, that will be great help!
So you bought it from Max? Great that he also adds englisch instructions! But I shouldn't be surprised, all people here who have ever dealed with him praise his help and good support!

many thanks again!

Yes... got it from ZHL MODEL... the Deluxe Version, as yours.

He sells a standard version also without the barrels and crates and a different building berth (the one pictured in the instructions). The difference in $$ is equivalent to a couple of good burgers in USA :)

Wood carved decoration is an extra.

Cheers!!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
with regards to the fragile boxwood carvings, you could carefully pass the piece through a thickness sander having the back facing upwards.
That way you can get most of the backing timber removed, then finish it with a sharp scalpel. .

Hey all,
Just joined. I started the Marmara. Manged to do the ribs with no breakage!!!! Now I am working on the planking. I have gotten this far but ran into a problem. The next plank does not fit exactly. their is are gaps on each side. Should this happen? If these are laser cut they should fit exactly. Or at least thats what I thought. Any insight you could give would be greatly appreciated20200916_202912.jpg

Hello elp2nd, welcome.
Although members will help you where they can, it is better to start a build log so you may get more specific help from others who may have encountered similar problems.
There is already a build log for this kit: Marmara Trade Boat, 1:48 , SC brand by member Dematosdg
