Krick “Alert” U.S. Cutter, 1/25 scale

I like this experiment, Jan, I really do!
Yup, it's lots of fun to fall off the extreme modeler wagon and try something different. I think I'll probably ink in a light to medium blue background . I just couldn't picture the letters "A L E R T" in brass 18MM high on this little ship. So the experiment continues.

...alternatively, you may just use cardboard like 1.00mm and print and glue on the cardboard, The last thing, just cut out with a sharp Exacto blade (well...hope that @dockattner Paul didn't know what I suggest). :D

Hello Jan! It is certainly a worthwhile experiment that you are busy with. You mention that you wish you could have that design carved out ... PM me.

Jan I really love how crisply and neatly you have executed your rigging. The lines are symmetrical, the knots clean and everything just looks "tight" - like it should be. Thumbs-Up Are you going to fit sails?

Hi Heinrich,

No sails are in my build plan. I like looking at the symmetry of the rigging and the deck work. The sails would hide a lot of that.

Rigging Continues:

I spent most of the week, a couple of minutes here and there adding more lines. The tricky part has been keeping the tension on lines already in place while tying new ones.

Both yard arms have the “Brace and Lift” lines added.

Not a vey good picture but it does show how far I’ve gotten.

The trick at this point seems to be not to bugger up what I’ve done while adding the new.

Hello Jan. I like that last comment of yours. I think that for us inexperienced rigging guys that is always a danger. Yours, however, looks awesome to me and you have certainly not buggered up anything as yet! Thumbsup

Hi Heinrich,

I would really like to trade in my my two fingers and eight thumbs for a proper set of tools to do this rigging stuff. Even the Admiral admits she doesn't know how I have learned the patience to do a step over and over until I'm satisfied with the outcome. If this was my first build I think I would have given up long ago. But the kibitzing, encouragement, hints and generally good natured remarks from you guys has given my inspiration to try things I would never ever have contemplated months ago.

The final stages:

Rainy day here, so it's OK to be in the Pathfinder boatyard. First on the agenda today was to glue in the Stanchions for the rope handrail.

There are eighteen stanchions and so there are also eighteen "eye bolts" required to support the the rope handrail.

As usual it took a great number of tries before I was satisfied with eighteen that I could use.

The next step was to serve the rope for the handrail, that took a bit of time.

I think I should have gotten the motorized version of this little unit. It took many turns of the crank to do the first rope, but I'm pleased with the result.

To be continued.

Another step completed:

The starboard side rope rail in place. I was a bit puzzled on how that part of the build would come together, but I like the result.

The photo also shows the scale of the Cutter versus one of my Model Railroad figures. The ship is
1.25 and the figure is 1.22.5.

Jan it is great when we are building - almost what seems in unison. The rope railing looks great, but what I really find beautiful on this model is all the all-wooden finish. You have really painted with wood in this build!

Funny that was entirely unintentional, but then again I didn't care for the various paint schemes of other "Krick Alert" builds that I found on the internet. In retrospect I would not have painted the inside of the Bulwarks or the Waterways white. That seemed to be great idea a few months back now its another lesson learned.

I'm very curious about your use of Tung oil and in the process of "researching" the "how to do it" for my next build.

Thanks for following my log, your comments are always welcome.

In my next posting on the sampan, I will cover the use of tung oil in detail - and also discuss the different ways of applying it for different effects.
