HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. My Mom from Durban has come down for a visit . Was super good to see her again. She is 80 and does not stop..so much energy. She is an artist and I have asked her paint me a picture of the Victory at Trafalgar. Let’s see who finishes first- my build or her picture;). Her is a pic of My Mom, myself, my kids and their boyfriend/girlfriend at my place having a braai. No guessing who my kids areROTF

Clearly Little work done on Victory. Made the hooks and blocks for the quarter Davits(Which I made earlier):

Cheers Grant

Grant, great family pic, thanks for sharing. You should know better than to challenge your Mom. Remember, she is ranked even higher than an admiral and they are never wrong. I feel sorry for you when she shows you her completed painting of the Victory while you are still only on your second ratline ROTF

But enjoy the braai, wish I was there Thumbsup

Hey Grant
Great family picture
Enjoy your Mum's visit

Simply a beautiful picture Grant! Those memories are ones to be treasured at all costs. I join Mark in saying that I wish I could have been there - not only for the braai, but to meet all of you and have a squizz at the Victory! :)

Oh, and your kids are the ones with YOUR smile!
obviously a comment from a professional orthodontic ;)

Thanks Heinrich- when you next in SA, you must come visit Melkbosstrand for a good old SA braai. Thumbsup

Good evening- The admiral took my Mom to an art expo this afternoon so I had time to do some modeling :D.

Finished the spritsail yards and the slings. Then blunder......The hoops for the stays are in wrong place- blue arrow correct. Hopefully tomorrow while all sleep I will attach these. Cheers Grant

Yards looking good Grant. Very small blunder, I certainly would not have noticed ROTFand at least you caught it early Thumbsup

I most certainly will, thank you Grant! But ... the way things are going now with Covid, it seems as if I will never get to visit SA - at least not if I want to return to China.

Good morning. The Admiral took my Mom to the charity she is involved with (Vintage with Love) so I had time to rig.

Been doing the bowsprit. Some of the processes:

I struggled to seize or lash 2 and 3mm ropes and blocks. To achieve a similar result I wrapped a 2mm thread around the blocks and made a loop around a 6mm drill bit. Tied with overhead knot and dabbed with a little super glue. : Here are the blocks which are fitted to the bowsprit cap for the spritsail yard halyards. Trimming to be done.

I lashed the yard slings using a 5mm thread with a double half hitch :

For the Spritsail stays, I used 3mm single and 5mm double Sheave blocks. To attach these to the forecastle I could not make metal hooks small enough so used a 5mm thread around the block and twisted the thread together with CA glue. Drilled 6mm holes and inserted the twisted part. Used CA glue to hold. It actually is stronger than using metal - did some test first.

Where the stays join the bowsprit I used small rings to the bowsprit and seized the stays.

Grant you are flying along! I am sure the cathead looks exactly the same as before while your rope and rigging work looks absolutely brilliant. It is clean in execution, looks accurate and i have no doubt that you are now getting the hang of this dark art!

Oh, so they seem to be very good indeed :)
Btw, I've brought a potjie pot from Johannesburg and I cook in it sometimes :)
Thank you. That is good to have the constant memories of your SA trip. I have an Afrikaans staff member,Rian who values his traditions and heritage, and he makes a brilliant lamb potjie at the office for some braai days- takes like 4 hours to make- delicious.
