Ulises - Occre by Bill C

I am building Ulises by Occre. This is my first venture into ship modelling, although I have been building model railroads on various scales for more than half a century. I am up to the hull painting phase. So far so good and great fun gas been had. There appears to be lots of useful advice here. Good to be aboard!!

Here is my effort on building the stern of Ulises. Interesting!!

Bending of the rubbing strake used a method suggested by my clever wife employing cooking bowls.

I had to slightly enlarge the hole for the propellor shaft as I got it slightly low. Still a 60mm blind bore wasn't three bad!

We will be visiting the Cunbres and Toltec and Silverton and Durango Scenic Railroads in the Fall. Exciting to see the 1:1 scale Mike's. Ours is 1:48 on 16.5mm gauge track.

Today, we stripped off the masking tape and here is Ulises! My beloved lady, she of the steady hands, has offered to paint the white water line. Then to paint the bulwarks.

The crew, actually 1:32 scale, may look a but tall but the bulwarks are actually only, in reality, 600mm high.

Today I fitted the limber boards to the top of the bulwarks. Initially I decided that the boards didn't need to be soaked to make the curves by the bows, but.... Follow your wife's advice and fortunately wood is a very forgiving material. I am going to paint the boards mahogany to match rhe colour of the rubbing strake. Hull varnished.

Slow progress, but very satisfying.

The hull is finished. Rudder and rudder controls fitted along with the connection between the propellor shaft and the motor drive. Now we start with the real fun - the superstructure. I also have deck and navigation lights to fit.
