These guys have a wide range of screws - all good quality. https://www.mcfeelys.com/Anyone know where I can purchase some 1" - 1 3/4" very small diameter wood screws? I need some to mount a ship model hull to a base.
If it's any help, I purchased the pedestals on which my boat sits through Model Expo and the screws were included.Anyone know where I can purchase some 1" - 1 3/4" very small diameter wood screws? I need some to mount a ship model hull to a base.
Thanks, but #4 are too thick. This is to connect a base to the keel of my cross-section Victory.sheet rock screws in that size are #6.
if you need #4 then get trim sheet rock screws.
They were part of the plan but I have had a very difficult time finding the type of fasteners I need.Since you live in the USA, Ace Hardware stores usually have a wide selection of fasteners, sold by the piece. While I find their being “helpful people” business approach overbearing rather than helpful, if you can get past this and look through the many little drawers you might find something.
Coarse threaded machine screws can also be an option. If your keel is a hard wood like maple, it can actually be tapped. Another option would be to drill a hole in the keel equal to the clearance diameter of the screw. Wax the screw, coat it with epoxy, and insert it in the hole to cure. Remove the screw when cured. You now have a tapped hole for your machine screw.
Possibly too late to help but display options need to be part of the planning process before starting your model. Heavy handed construction like drilling holes in the keel are best done before fragile detail is added.

Thanks but the base is round, 3/4" thick. The hull of the model is approx. 4 1/2" - 5" long. Keel blocks and shores will be overwhelming and just would not look at all good. I hope a trip to Ace Hardware will be productive. Why not try an approach that avoids screwing a fastener into the keel of your finished model. Keel blocks and shores?
ah i see now its a very small boat. glue in thin dowels n epoxy it to the mounts. the dowels can even be brads or wire nails cut to length. Thanks but the base is round, 3/4" thick. HI Rob,16th century long boat.
I thought it looked like 18th century but wanted to confirm. Thanks Roger, much appreciated. The only example of a Sixteenth Century Longboat that I know of is Vasa’s. Drawings do exist for this.
