Steam tug STROHGBOV - 1:100 scale, own development.

Hello friends,
looking for an idea for my new project I came across photos of the steam tug with side paddle wheels "STRONGBOV". I find this type of ship very interesting. I immediately decided to make it according to my project and details. In the beginning, I didn't have any blueprints. I started from photos of an already built radio controlled model. I started by making the paddle wheels.

Always nice to see a new build-log about the scratch build of a Paddle Wheeler, Lachezar. And as a paper build it’s interesting.

Hi Peter, thank you for your comment. I immediately found and examined Paddle Wheeler's ship. Very impressive craftsmanship. I also hope to build something that unfortunately won't be able to float in water.
While making the paddle wheels, I received some prototype drawings from a friend. I started the hull of the ship. I should note that this is my first time doing a full ship hull. After I drew and cut out the ribs I glued them with 5 mm cardboard. Between them I put an insert folded at an angle. Thus I achieved a sufficiently strong and stable skeleton. I made the cover from 4 mm wide strips of paper. A relatively smooth body was obtained.

Nice to see how some of these fine paper built ships are done, very similiar to how the wooden counterparts are built.

Kurt, thanks for the kind words. And I continue construction. After some putty and sanding, I got the desired shape of the ship's hull. I don't have much experience in coloring. I don't have an airbrush so I had to paint with a brush, but first I glued the main deck of the ship.
After some nerves, here is the final result:

Peter, thanks for the hull rating. I myself was surprised that this was not very difficult to achieve. This gives me the courage to look at a new project.
I'm currently working on the ship upgrades. I started with the interesting construction above the paddle wheels.

Hoe did you smoothen the hull? Normally with wood you just sand it, but with paper ?

This is brilliant paper modelling, I 'm loving it. The hull is excellent (I've never managed one as good as yours! ) and the detailing is perfect. I'll be watching this build with great interest.

I have a perhaps stupid idea to offer about these paper hulls
which are fairly fragile. In boat building school we used to put a fiberglass cloth over strip hulls to consolidate and protect them. There are some very light weight fiberglass cloth used for RC models that could be used for this purpose after the hull is assembled. Epoxy attaches the fiberglass cloth and then fills the grain and gets sanded. Beautiful durable finish. Paint or leave clear
It's much easier than dealing with a fragile paper surface and is easier than it sounds

Again this might be a stupid idea but I'm going to try it

Marco, Tom and Forester, thanks for your comments. As I already wrote, this is my first ship hull made of paper. I, like you, was afraid that it would deform and it would be difficult to achieve a good result. It turned out not so difficult. I used the most ordinary materials. Paper 160 grams, ordinary putty for wood and fine sandpaper. The point was to wait for everything to dry well and PATIENCE.
Forester, your idea is interesting but requires different technology and materials. But maybe the model will be able to launch on water?

thanks to everyone who watched and commented on my project.

It so happened that I was absent from the forum for more than two months. During this time I managed to finish the project I started. In my next two posts I will illustrate the result I achieved.

First I made the anchor winch. Then I searched for a long time to find a suitable anchor chain. I could not find one and so I had to use what I had at hand. However, this forced me to make a new anchor winch. I did not particularly like the result, but I decided to continue

This model is utterly fantastic. The fact that it is paper simply boggles my mind. While some detail is taken care of in the printing process before assembly, just putting those feathering paddlewheels together to look like they could actually work is beyond understanding! When you look at the detail, and then stop to realize that each one is less than 5cm in diameter, it takes your breath away. Well done Lachesar!
