I've no idea how I just ended up here...

I was reading Honour This Day, a novel by Alexander Kent where he mentioned about a Bomb-vessel and described it as a ship "powerfully built to withstand the recoil of mortars". I wondered about what such a ship might look like, so after going down the Google rabbit hole I ended up here and had to sign up to look at the page on this forum. So here I am. I thought it rude to pass by without a word.

Fare ye well till the next time.

Kit :)

P.S. I used to enjoy making models but I've never built a ship. Yet. But this forum has certainly piqued my interest.

WELCOME to SoS!!!
There are build logs here that you can find using the search box at the top of the page. Original drawings also exist if you enjoy research.

Vesuvius 1776 below is one of dozens of examples of original plans available at the Royal Museum Greenwich Collections website. https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/search/Bomb vessel There is also at least one contemporary contract for a bomb vessel from 1694 at the National Archives, Kew England.

Hello and welcome aboard. I think that coming here was a sign that you should be building ship models. You’ve even been shown which ship to build.

I do find a desire to build a physical model ship compelling the more I hear about it. Thank you for such a warm and surprising welcome. There are so many types of ships one could build its a wonder knowing where to start. I suppose I'm more drawn to age of sail vessels like brigs, frigates and ships of the line. (I have quite a bit of experience building, sailing and battling with such ships in certain computer games if that counts).

Yes. This exactly what I was looking for. I was wondering how a mortar platform was constructed within the ships hull. I'm not sure of the nautical term but it seems that these log pillars (acros? scafold?) fit and brace against the ribs of the hull itself. Amazing that the ship could hold up not only to the weight but also the repeated recoil of something like 13 inch mortars. I had never really considered about mortars being fired from ships but it makes sense, if not being incredibly difficult to aim. Its really interesting stuff. Thank you!
