One of the most elusive and difficult aspects of modeling the schooner yacht "America"'s hull is the tumblehome (or inward return, or curve, of the hull from a little aft of mid-ships to the transom, an odd, rather unique, and signature feature of this racing yacht's hull. It rarely translates well onto plans and laser cut bulkheads for successful modeling as it is a rather unusual and subtly sculpted feature extending right around the curved stern of the boat, with the transom craftily attached to it.
From the upper edge of the tumblehome is a vertically raised bulwark subtly beginning about midships and travelling right around the stern inside the transom with the railing continuous on top. Very difficult to understand and model in three dimensions.
Even going so far as to practice modeling this stern in modeling clay (in a smaller scale) in order to understand it is not an outrageous idea.
I preferred modeling this hull using the old fashioned solid carved wood method. I have an old Model Shipways blank for this purpose, if you are interested in going that route. If so, PM me and I'll send it to you. Caveat: this method is rife with its' own unique set of problems to overcome.
