Kingfisher 1770 1:48 POF [COMPLETED BUILD]

Thank you for this encouraging post, Dean! I suspect there was a tiny model builder inside of me all along. Strangely, I can't explain what took me so long to find this hobby. It checks a lot of boxes for me so it should have been something I encountered many years ago. Sure did waste a lot of time missing fairways off the tee and three-putting from 10 feet. ROTF
Well you hit a hole in one with ship building! ;)

The ship's lantern provided by the kit was a photo-etched affair that would not have worked on this model. Here is my attempt at a suitable replacement:

Attempt?!? Attempt, you say? Wow, that lantern is fantastic! The crowning cherry on top of a magnificent model. You have a lot to be proud of. Thanks for letting us come along for the ride. Beer

Thanks, Russ. It's not quite right, but it is right enough for hobby work ROTF.

And its my pleasure to share this forum with such a fine group of modelers.

Only just caught up on your progress. The lantern and final carvings and blocks have maintained the standard, excellent.

I understand you are yet to make the display case and stand, but once finished this will be a model that will continue to bring you a sense of satisfaction and pride in your abilities.

As others have said previously your build thread is a joy to read, with so much care taken to share your trials and tribulations. We all have learnt much about how to be better modelers and thank you for your generous spirit.

I for one look forward to your next project and hope that you will continue to post here on SoS.

Applause, applause, applause standing applause, whistling, more applause. Bravo

Michael

Thank you for this nice post and the many that preceded it. You have a natural gift for encouragement, and you are kind to spread good feelings around the forum.

Good morning Paul,
it's incredible how time flies. I congratulate you on this beautiful model. It's been a wonderful journey that I/we were able to follow. I'm pretty sure you should definitely take on the next project with all the carvings. You have the skills for it; you grow with your tasks.
Thank you, Tobias. Since I am still a relative newcomer (well, whatever you would call someone with less than five years of working experience), growing with the task is the only option :). For most of what I encountered on the Vasa and the Kingfisher it was "the first time I ever tried that." The ability to see and follow the work of others on a forum like this is a bonus - but, as you know, actually doing something is where the learning truly begins.

Once I have the KF under cover I will take some time...

hello Paul,
First of all, congratulations on this fantastic model. Also, all respect and appreciation for going the extra mile and staying the course, not to mention the craftsmanship. Simply fantastic and wonderful. Many, many thanks for showing it. Thank you for the many valuable pictures. A treasure for anyone interested in model shipbuilding. I simply don't have the words for everything else.
Greetings

Ps…and of course the question arises ..." What's next...?"

Thank you very much, Charlie. It has been a joy to learn from the wonderful builders here on the forum and then get to share my work in return.

Ps…and of course the question arises ..." What's next...?"
First: a bit of a rest. Then...?

Without intending to proselytize...

Nearly 2000 years ago the cross (a symbol of the crucifixion, shame, and death) was transformed into a symbol of salvation and hope. To the men and women of faith on our forum who have chosen to put their trust in the one who brought about that transformation: Happy Easter! He is risen!

Hello Friends,

Work has begun on the display base. My vision is for a ship's launch / drydock sort of thing on a gravel / sand base. Not quite a diorama, but more than just a wooden base with pedestals...

When I was working on the Vasa, I had ordered a bunch of dimensional pearwood from a gentleman from Russia. He also included some scraps. "Bibigon's Gift" was basically a small bundle of offcuts, miscuts, etc. that he would have otherwise tossed in the fire. Well, I dug that out and have been turning those scraps into the cribbing and supports for my display.

And here we go:

I then installed these pieces on the base which I had previously edge-profiled and stained:

I then installed a perimeter that the acrylic cover will sit just outside of:

And finally, I added the sand / gravel fill:

My thanks to Adi (@pianoforte) who gave me some tips and best practices for the 'landscaping' part of the display base.

Onward!

That is a solid and very nice looking base, Paul. Curious about how you are going to position and ……… brace the model?
Regards, Peter
