Discussion The Tool That Frustrated You Most – A Waste of Money?!

Did you expect the Chinese company to speak and type perfect English.

Since they're building an exact copy of some English-speaking manufacturer's product, all they have to do is copy the spelling on the labels and instructions. There's no reason for them to learn to speak English at all. The problem isn't that they don't speak English. The problem is that they don't even take care to make an accurate copy of the printing on the labels.

What makes this tool unusable — is it the weak compressor, the airbrush itself, or both?
Hi Jimsky, to be honest I have no clue. My impression is that the pen itself is a crap, compared to professional models available on the market, but the overall outcome is that this guy is simply unusable and could be detrimental to our models. Not a surprise it's no longer available from Proxxon catalogue.
Cheers! Alberto

Umm… not quite. While I’ve never used this hand drill, the worst tool I’ve ever bought was the Arrowmax rotary tool. I probably ended up with a defective unit, but in terms of design, it should have been a better-engineered piece of equipment. Just my subjective opinion, of course.

I have a similar Arrowmax drill (I assume it's a drill and not an "engraver"), use it all the time and love it. I got my son one too. These run at about 600 rpm and come with drills from 0.5mm to 2mm, and pretty much replace a pin vise for me. I also bought the "engraver" version, which runs at a much higher speed (10k?), and feel it's worthless. Came with a bunch of bits I can use in my Dremel, but this thing has so little torque it's useless to me.

plank crimper. All it does is breaks my planks. I gave up on using it:

I bought a similar one when I had a model of the Berlin, which I never started. But I did try it on some planks and it seemed to work great. I sold it with the kit on eBay. When I got my Ragusian Carrack kit, I bought another. It was complete junk and didn't do a think to the planks. Can't figure out what the difference was. Maybe just that I needed it, when previously I didn't.

I just don't understand The Chinese (or Chinese, for that matter). I know many speak English, and large companies can surely hire someone who does, but their choice in product names and brands borders on the unbelievable. A quick search now on Amazon for men's shirts gives:

What brand of shirt would you rather buy? AKAWOOKO, COOFANDY (a very popular brand), COSSNISS, VATPAVE, Asamqu, Envmb, JOGAL or Hanes?

Elegoo Phecda laser cutter/engraver. Mostly because I just don’t have the ideas or sufficient interest to make it earn its keep as the bed capacity is a bit too small for veneer decks, which is what I’d planned to do. Consequently I lose about 4’ x 4’ of table space on something that was far too expensive to just put down to experience. In my defence I had never even seen a laser before this got delivered and had no idea of the critical sizes

Unfortunately the worst tool I have bought was also one of the more expensive. The Proxxon FET saw which is billed as a precision table saw is a complete waste of money (IMHO). I was looking to get a Brynes table saw right when Jim passed away so got the Proxxon. Hugh disappointment!
The FET needs quite a lot of fettling to get it good. Many posts on the subject on SOS.

Thanks Stuart, I have looked at many (if not all) posts here and on other sites. There are lots of good “fixes” out there. My issue is that none of them should be needed if Proxxon had taken a little pride and care in developing in their product.

Once I reeve the shrouds I cut triangles of graph paper in the shape of the shrouds and slide them in behind the shrouds and use the lines on the graph paper to make guides for the ratlines. Here's a pic:

When I was doing ratlines on my cross section, I being a geek, used MS Excel to make a spaced line section that I could print out, nice thing is with excel, you can copy one sheet and adjust line spacing to make second, third or as many needed sheet with different spacing to fit the scale modeling. I just made adjustment till I got one that looked correct. As as above, when I printed the sheet and cut to fit behind shrouds and it gave me lines to use for spacing and to keep lines level.

Interrsting I love this tool. Charges fast, easy to handle. The bits are a bit cheap, but overall I love it. IMHO
