HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

It is fantastic that you have the linings/stops recessed on the outboard side so the gun port lids will sit flush with the planking. I realize it is often a gross kit error, but far too many modern models incorrectly have them flush with the planking.

Thanks Allan. I am giving it a go to attempt to make each part of this ship as close as possible as it is shown in the “The construction and fitting of the sailing man of war”. I’m not getting it spot on. It is way more difficult to build this way than what the kit suggests and for me it is a very steep learning curve. This kit is so far off the Enterprise that I am going to just call it a British Frigate from now on. Way more fun that just slotting together a kit - may not end up looking so goodROTF. Cheers Grant

Good morning Paul. It was more of a . The kit wales are just so far off and I used these drawings as a measuring guide. I will still cut some wood (a very entertaining experience ROTF) and do a top and butt pattern but I will use my cherry plank rather- I found the walnut difficult to work with and the grain lifted. Good learning exercise. Cheers Grant

Hello Grant, your desire to achieve historical accuracy is commendable, with your talents the end result will be stunning as are your other builds.

Maybe call it one of the names of her sisters Siren (1773), Fox (1773), Acteon (1775), Medea (1778), Serpine (1777), Andromeda (1777), Aurora (1777), et al :) :)

Good morning Allan. That I could but I doubt it will look exactly like any of the sister ships eitherROTF. I notice the kit provided a Lion as the figurehead and while this was a symbol of the British navy at the time, it appears the Entrrprise had a male figure as its figure head. I have read some debates which the Enterprise had however most believe it is the human figure……just another reason to call it an example of a British FrigateROTF .Cheers Grant

Good morning Daniel. Thank you kindly for this. I am having loads of fun in my attempt and hopefully it comes out good at the end. While I am giving it a go to get the accuracy there are already a multitude deviations and little wood work errors but this is ok. One day when “I’m big” I will, hopefully, build a proper replica. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant,

A steep learning curve is nice, it keeps you challenged and as we see you do it well and we learn something from it.
Keep it coming.
Good morning Maarten. Thank you for looking at my humble build. I appreciate this. I really enjoy learning and trying new things. Luckily I am starting from a very low base so I have many years ahead climbing this ship building curve. Cheers Grant

Do you think the 1777 Joseph Marshall painting is an accurate depiction of the figurehead which he shows as Perseus carrying the head of Medusa? I have no idea if it was the idea of the artist or was what was actually done on the ship, just a thought. As the painting was done several years after she was launched I would hope it is an accurate rendition of her figurehead.

Invoking AL-FI might save you a lot of issues. I do have an opinion on my abilities to build any model to its original (if any) specifications, all I can say on this matter is that any resamblance of my models with a past or present ship or airplane is purely coincidental

Hi Allan. I will try and find the discussion I read regarding the figure head. The conclusion was as shown in your picture shown. Cheers Grant

Good morning Gentlemen. I’m relaxing in the town of Hermanus with family and some friends. Pretty cool.

I wasn’t going to post these pics as I have so much fettling to do on the ports - need to square them off and trim some poorly measured planks - ahh nothin wrong with a little WIP.

I add the Friese supplied by the kit - first time for me and it is a lot more fiddly than I expected.
Planked some of the bow also WIP.

One day will present a finished part for you guys but not this dayROTF.
Cheers Grant

Grant, although not finished it looks great. The Friese applied also looks fantastic.

Hermanus must be the place to be ROTF.
Regards Herman

Nice work Grant.

We all have the same story, everytime, every where and every one. The most important thing, you have fun. And we enjoy the progress.
Hi Stephan. That is true. I do have plenty fun even the cussing is rather enjoyable when I am in my shipyards. For some reason with this build I have jumped around (nothing new- ricochet rabbit) and finished nothing. Maybe I can start with my gunports, cut the inner side to fit for starters. I really enjoy the planking so I keep getting distracted ROTF:oops:. Cheers Grant
