Hi, a quick question. On HMS Victory model should footropes (horses) be tarred or only the stirrups? Google AI brings up different opinions saying that footrope is also tarred to ensure sailor's feet do not slip off on it and for preserving the rope of course. Current HMS Victory museum shows pictures with tarred stirrups but with bare hemp footropes. Thanks.

I’m currently building the Mamoli HMS Victory at a1:90 scale.
I made the stirrups using 24 gauge annealed wire that I purchased from Bluejackets Shipcrafters. And for the foot ropes I used cotton thread

As far as I know stirrups were parcelled (and consequently tarred). Footropes were they parcelled or not ??
Tarred or not makes no difference to the footing.(grip). Tarred (on board) is black, tarred as new is dark brown. XVIII-XIX° they were parcelled wire and rather straight between the stirrups. At the stirrups a small ^. In my personal opinion most rigging and blocks look oversized (and/or too black). Pictures of XX° sailingships show masts, stays,
bent sails, and not much else. Most ropes on board a ship are about 2" 3/4 , at 1/96, some 0.2mm at most.
I like a shipmodel "as it looks right", not as the original "was built". But every one has his opinion and as he likes.
