Royal Louis - Mamoli

Hello Ken, Still watching and enjoying your build. I remember the day when I had gun ports spread all over my bench. Nice work, good luck, and looking forward to seeing your completed ship.

Ragnar

Hi Ragnar, Thanks for following my build and for your very kind comments. Yes gun ports, I was dreading these but once that I got my head around a production line they were done much quicker than I’d expected. I did have one issue, I’d concentrated on the main ports and completely forgot about the stern ones, it was only when I came to photograph it for my log that I realised I’d missed them out and had to return to my workbench to complete the job.

Hi Ken,

I just found your build thread. You are doing a beautiful job. It is amazing that you started your build in February. I will be following along and enjoying your work.

Bill
Hi Bill. Thanks for your kind comments. I have been building it for four months now, I got it for Xmas and started it on Boxing Day, so fast but not quite as fast as you thought

Splendid and colorful work, Ken. I really like how you used wood veneer on the cast gold decoration panels on the stern. It tends to subdue the contrast between the metal and wood and blend the parts together, so the decoration do not appear to be just pasted onto the wood hull. :D Thumbsup
Hi Kurt. Thanks for your comment. I must admit that the veneer wasn’t my idea, I just picked it up, but as you say a simple but effective way of lifting the appearance of large castings that would otherwise look false.

Good morning Ken. The wood hull and colours fit together wonderfully. I always love these ships of the line with all the gunports open in line - looking good. Cheers Grant
Hi Grant. Thanks. I took a chance with the colours, it was something different, I it's coming out as I hoped so I'm pretty pleased, it could have looked awful.

Hello and thank you for your complementary comments.

Today I’m showing you the kevels and the start of the visible canons. There were eight kevels, they were cast and pretty nicely done. I painted and fitted them, three each side of the main deck and one each side of the upper deck. I made, painted and fitted the four canons which sit under the main deck stairs. I’m not going to fully rig the canons but just the breech and in haul ropes to give some impression of being rigged. At 1:90 scale it’s just too small for me to be using the tiny blocks needed, those of you that have followed some of my other builds will understand the reason.

At the moment I’m making up the other canons on a production line, they’re starting to look quite presentable.

Hello. Continuing from yesterday I’ve now completed all the canons situated on the main deck. As you can see I’ve just made a token gesture of the rigging so that it doesn’t look too bare, overall for my purpose it’s acceptable.

There are twenty smaller guns on the next level of decks so I’ll have to get the production line going again.
