This will be a reconstruction of my Mary Rose build log. All was lost in the last MSW crash.

The build log on the Dutch model building forum is being used as the basis. Translating, copying, etc. all posts will take some time and effort.
The build started in February 2023 and the model looks like this now.

Here we go;)

Welcome to the construction of the Mary Rose.

This is not my first model; the previous model was the Golden Hind/Pelican in 1/45 scale in Scratch.
My first wooden model was the Vasa Billing Boats.

The Mary Rose was built in 1515 and sank in 1545. The remains have been salvaged and are now on display in a museum.
This will be an attempt to rebuild the ship on the cover of "Your Noblest Ship".

The book Tudor Warship contains a frame plan that has been enlarged to a scale of 1/50.

Looks decent

In the following posts, it will become apparent that the shape of the frames is not entirely correct.

The frames, continued

As can be seen in the photo, the shape of the frames from the book MR Tudor Warship is pretty good.

20230129_152822_1280.jpg

But if you compare this with the frame example from MR your Noblest Shippe, there is a considerable difference.
20230130_103851_1280.jpg

The advantage of the Mary Rose Noblest shippe is that fairly clear plans are included at a scale of 1/100. The one in the photo is enlarged by 200%.
20230201_182112_1280.jpg

Determining the position of the frames is also going quite well.
The frames are called sections here; the original wreck has been subdivided into sections to make it easier to place found objects.

20230226_092410_1280_1280.jpg

As you can see, there is a clear difference.
20230212_104756_1280.jpg

So, extra frames are made.
20230212_111441_1280.jpg

The length-to-width ratio also matches the noblest shippe dimensions better.
20230212_111803_1280.jpg

And adjusting the "old" frames
20230217_192739_1280_1280.jpg

The difference between section 10 and frame 11 is clearly visible.
20230226_092346_1280_1280.jpg

The new sections ( 1 5 6 8 10 ) are in the correct place and the frames (1 - 12) are being adjusted.
20230226_092223_1280_1280.jpg

Modify the frames and make an opening in the middle.

Make sure the screws remain accessible...
20230301_131156_1280.jpg

The aft section is finished. There were some problems with the bow, which is why the keel was sawn through.

Supervisor Felix has control over the shipyard ;)
20230302_105322_1280.jpg

The drawing from Noblest shippe has been manually enlarged.
20230303_104458_1280.jpg

A noticeable difference from my first bow...
20230302_092145_1280.jpg

20230303_104513_1280.jpg

And now it becomes clear why the waterlines were incorrect.
20230303_104555_1280.jpg

20230303_104602_1280.jpg

So further adjust and reposition the forward frames.
20230303_131302_1280.jpg

The frames are screwed to the baseboard and the waterlines are now reasonably correct.
The next task is gluing the frames to the keel pieces.

Thanks Peter
For the next few days, or longer, I will have to do a lot of copy/paste ;)

The lower part of the hull has been filled with blocks. This is some extra work, but it provides a solid base for the planking later.
(The most ugly hull on SoS ??)

What already stands out is the pointed shape of the bow. Never expected that on a big carrack like this.

The next step will be the planking.
First, I need to determine what goes where and how thick planks and such need to be cut.

At the rear, in the stern, there are 2 cannons (stern chasers).
Wrong or right? Tactically and historically, it could be correct.

The keel

The keel consisted of 3 parts, the front and rear ones of elm and the middle one of oak.
So the middle section of my keel consists of cherry, like the rest of the planking. The other parts are made of ramin (the last remnants from my previous project).

The entire bow section is glued.
This piece is much too long. Cutting it to size and shortening it later is easier than having to make it longer.
20230422_074254_1280.jpg

Nothing of the connection between the keel and the bow piece has stood the test of time. So, it's guesswork.

At least you have that to work from. I have been trying to think about whether it is even worth trying to reconstruct my log. I have all my research compiled in my document, but don't have much else.

Good to see you are able to rebuild it.

The planking

First of all, we are making wale
The form they gave it back then is something nice ... Therefore, a kind of scraper was first made in the correct shape.
20230415_170121_1280.jpg

And then we do this
20230501_091105_1280.jpg

And we get this. Later I discovered that this shape was so that water standing on the wale could not seep inside.
20230501_091520_1280.jpg

The "planking example"
Green are the front and back pieces that fit into the keel.
The red one is a very wide plank at the bottom; I'm making it narrower so I don't run into problems later.
I still need to take a look at blue (a veeeery wide plank...)
20230428_104958_1280.jpg

The cherry wood is first moistened, if necessary, and bends very easily.

Thumbs up
Crashing once is bad luck. Crashing a second time is....Thumbsdown

First, i sawed a batch of planks of various widths.

The stern
Planked at a 45° angle
20230507_151802_1280.jpg

Further planning.
In those days, different widths of planks were used. As can be seen in the photos, it is sometimes a bit of a puzzle, hence all the lines, numbers, and notes.
20230507_151851_1280.jpg

20230509_161920_1280.jpg

And sometimes things don't go as planned... And an adjustment is needed.
20230510_184729_1280.jpg

First sign off on what is in excess.

Back on the right track
20230510_185813_1280.jpg

20230511_192445_1280.jpg

For some reason, back then they deemed it necessary to start the bow with an extra wide plank.
20230512_193104_1280.jpg

We use an extra wide plank as a starting point for this.
20230512_193125_1280.jpg

It is first brought into approximately the correct shape at the bottom.
20230512_194016_1280.jpg

The remaining opening goes from narrow at the bow, through wider in the middle, to narrower again at the stern.
So, this looks okay for now.
20230603_160737_1280.jpg

20230603_160751_1280.jpg

The planking on the other side is about halfway.
The widths of the planks are simply taken from the other side, so much less thinking and calculating this time.

20230715_151952_1280.jpg

I am quite happy with this special plank at the stern.
20230715_195058_1280.jpg

First, a "quality control" check follows. After that, further sanding will take place and the keel will be tapered.
20230715_195134_1280.jpg

After a day of sanding in the sun, the lower part of the hull has been sanded.
The keel and the stem are tapered.
As you can see, the model has also been detached from the base plate.
20230718_132352_1280.jpg

The tapered keel; the cross-section drawings were very helpful for this.
20230718_134332_1280.jpg

A bit straighter than the original, though...
20230718_134410_1280.jpg

Tapering the bow was a bit of a free interpretation; little of the original remained.
20230718_155537_1280.jpg

And, Mary Rose landed on her feet (keel)
20230718_155355_1280.jpg

The base plate must now be modified before construction can continue.
20230718_190434_1280.jpg

A new base plate.
Large and bulky, but sturdy, and the model is easily accessible.
20230721_112455_1280.jpg

It is also still possible to align them neatly and at right angles.
20230721_110430_1280.jpg

20230721_112413_1280.jpg

Here and there, the "wale" was slightly the wrong shape.
The wood glue was loosened with isopropyl alcohol and the whole thing was glued back.
20230721_120240_1280.jpg

20230722_112905_1280.jpg

Check if we are still at the correct height based on the dimensions on the cross-sections.
Only a 1 mm deviation here and there, that's fine with me ;).
20230722_154222_1280.jpg

The first plank is going in
20230722_154033_1280.jpg

A lot of clamping
20230723_144301_1280.jpg

The intention is to install at least 2 planking strakes. These will serve as base support at the bottom for the wooden frames that will replace the plywood.
