USS Constitution 1:70 Scratch

Hi Mustafa
Had to look that one up. A very enjoyable drink I'm sure. I've never had Raki, but I quite like Chartreuse, which also has a very distinct anise flavor.
I guess it doesn't matter much what you're drinking when looking at a sunset like that. :)

Sorry to interrupt your vacation again, Mustafa. But, I'm wondering if you know that the royal halliards are rigged to blocks that are mounted to "eyebolts on channel inboard of backstays". See my last post about this late discovery for me.

After I learned of this, I scoured your vast collection of photos here, but couldn't find any that showed these eyebolts on your channels. I know you haven't gotten to the royal halliards yet. So, maybe this too will be an unexpected wrinkle for you.

Here's the best example of a photo you posted. I believe the two eyebolts to the stern on this channel are for backstays. I don't see any eyebolts inboard of those.

I hope you installed them, and it's just a matter of me being unable to find them.

Hopefully I'm not the bearer of bad tidings.
I'm going home now to pour myself something a little stronger than raki...

best

Peter

For what it's worth, Ken didn't have these early in his build either,

But later photos with rigging do show the halliards are attached to eyebolts on the channels.

Thanks for the heads-up, Peter. Yes, you’re right. I noticed the eyebolts after I had already glued the channels in place, but fortunately, this won’t be a big problem for me because I managed to drill the holes for the eyebolts in the channels. I’ll install the eyebolts when the time comes.
By the way, I’m heading back to my shipyard starting next weekend. I’ve really missed my shipyard!
By the way, did you get a chance to try Turkish rakı?

Store clerk checking to see if tekirdag in stock.

The first place I tried only had Yeni.

Nope. They're out. But have the others. I'll try Efe.

Gregg, the store that had the best selection by me was a chain called Liquor Barn.

The triple distilled Efe is excellent. If you like licorice, you're going to love this. I had it over ice with just a smidge of water.

Hey friends, it’s been over a week since I got back home, but I still haven’t been able to step into my workshop because it’s directly exposed to the sun and still way too hot. If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out since I’m further along with this build than the other guys working on it, I’ll probably be able to help.

I completed the rigging of the mizzen topgallant mast and yard. I started by rigging the topgallant mast shrouds. Next, I led the yard halliard down to deck level using two single blocks. As with the other yards, I left the connection of the halliard to its belaying point on the channel until later, so that it would not obstruct access to the deck during the remaining work.

Finally, I rigged the yard lifts, completing the mizzen topgallant yard rigging.

From a selfish point of view, your timing couldn't have been more perfect. Having said that, beautifully done. Would you mind taking a picture of the jig tackle connected to the halyard, please?
Thanks Peter, as I mentioned in my previous post, as with the other yards, I left the connection of the halliard to its belaying point on the channel until later, so that it would not obstruct access to the deck during the remaining work. So I haven't made the jig tackle yet. According to the MS plans, the jig tackle is arranged with a double block attached to the end of the halyard and a single block secured to the channel. A rope is then rove between them to complete the connection.

By the way, the illustration in the MS plans is not very clear, it’s hard to tell which block is single and which is double. The correct arrangement is a double block attached to the halyard and a single block secured to the channel. The standing end of the rope is made fast to the single block at the channel, then led through the double block on the halyard, and finally belayed to a pin on deck.

If you haven't already attached the double block to the halyard, I don't imagine it will be easy to strop on now that the halyard is already in place.

This yard is not the difficult one. The ones I'm struggling with are those with the double block that has the halyard attached to the top and the jig tackle attached to the bottom.

I wasn't at the shipyard so I wasn't sure what the configuration was for this particular yard. I believe this rig is one I've already prepared in advance.

You can't attach the double block to the halyard beforehand because the halyard runs through the block attached to the yard, then through another block attached to the top of the mast, before running back down. So you should attach the double block to the halyard in place.

Now that I'm back at the shipyard referencing my notes, I can see that this particular halliard/jig tackle configuration is one of the four that I have already pre-made. The other three block configurations are for the royal halliards. I guess my thinking for these four particular sets was that it shouldn't be that big a deal to attach the upper end of the halyard to the sling on the royal yards or via blocks and sling/eye splice to the mast. I can probably fake an eye splice at the upper end of the mizzen topgallant halyard when the time comes.

The combinations that I'm really sweating are those for the fore and main topsails and topgallants. As difficult as my blocks are to handle, even off the ship, I cannot see me attempting to strop and seize both sides of the top block of the jig tackle, while the top end of the halliards are already in place.

I'm afraid that I'm in analysis paralysis limbo here. I keep coming to the shipyard and getting nothing done while I think about all of this stuff.

For today, at least, I'm going to divert my energies into making the upper crosstrees.

Thank you Mustafa.

Yes, you're right, that's one method too. I hadn't thought of that.
