HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Good morning. Cap rails continued……

I have played with many ideas to get my finish a little contemporary. Firstly I scraped the outer edge of the rail to achieve the historically accurate look, however these came out horrid and I did not like the look and feel of the ship- especially the black gun port frames.

So like many contemporary models before me I decided to line the outer edge of the cap rail and stain the gunport frames the same colour as the bulwark.

I don’t have any kit cherry wood left so I am cutting wood from my plank I bought. The grain is not as tight as the kit cherry and I am having issues bending this- just kept splitting. So alternate methods attempted.
View attachment 641507
I tried two methods to make these sharp bends.
1. I cut little sections around the bend at angles. This can be seen on the upper curve of the lining.
2. I cut the shape from a 1.5mm sheet. The lower bend and the “twirly” decoration.

Hmmmmmm……..close ups… ROTF.
I really like the overall look and feel I am getting tho:D.
Cheers Grant.
Awesome work!!

Awesome work!!
Thank you Paul.
Looks great Grant -I am enjoying following your progress ! I took the same approach on my first scratch build - Confederacy.

Thanks very much. Yep- your Confederacy is the look and feel I am hoping for. Just maybe she will come out something close to yours…..hopefully ROTF
Fine work, Grant. Ignore the macros - I bet it looks perfect to the naked eye.
Thank you Paul. When I look at it I am very chuffed. After cropping the pics to macro it was like ……”is this the same ship”ROTF. I had to show you guys anyway.
Just playing catch up, which seems to be more and more a bad habit of mine. Really wonderful work Grant.
Thank you Roger. I am doing more of that now days as well. It seems more guys are posting and difficult to keep up at times.

Cheers Grant

After rigging, close-ups are my next pet hate! Everything looks great until you take the photo, put it on a big monitor and sigh - "how did I miss that?' o_O
Of course it's because the model is supposed to be looked at with the naked eye, from a safe 'don't touch' distance, not through a telephoto lens!

True story Ian. Still I was a bit surprise how my carving (if you can call it that- more like a hole and some scrapping ROTF ) was a shocker close up. I can live with it though. Cheers Grant

There are a few folks on this forum (I’m looking at you, @dockattner and @archjofo ) who produce fractal results, i.e. no matter how close you look the results are the same: perfect. I’m not one of them. Mine are more in a class with Manet—they look okay from a distance, but up close, they’re just a mess.

Good evening. I am humbled by your compliment and I thank you. Paul and Johan are in that “alien” league of Modelship builders…..I always look at that group of guys and wonder….” How on earth do they do that”.
She's coming along quite nicely and macro's are very distorting, so don't put too much value in those.
Hello Johan. How are you doing? Any new modelling adventures? Thankfully I am happy with my ship and those few blunders highlighted by macros so far just gives it a
Little character ;) …. That’s what I keep telling myselfROTF
Wow Grant. That is truly impressive. Well done on creating this masterpiece
Thank you for the kind words Kieth. It has been a challenge for me - with Pretty much everything however I am really enjoying this build.
Agreed, I hate seeing my close up photos after thinking something looks great…sigh
We can’t only show the good pics…..sighROTF

Good morning from Bokriver. After a hectic business week in Johannesburg (was a good one ) I decided to take the Admiral to a quiet little cottage in the mountains . The kids, spouses and puppies decided to gatecrash my quiet time…….what a pleasure:D.

Long story to justify my excuse for my limited SOS activity ROTF.

Before I left for JHB this is the work I did.
The PS rails :

There is a “clamp slip” which I will have to fix. That annoying activity when the wood moves marginally after clamping and you only see it after it drys:rolleyes:.

The forecastle margin plank with notches was also finished:

Incredible work on the model!!

Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos.

Super job taking the Admiral to a "quiet cottage in the mountains". Glad you eventually enjoyed it with the kids/spouses/puppies....priceless!!

Left the model at home and taking the Admiral to a cottage in the mountains…… Now you are building up credits, Grant. It is always good to get away for a while and recharge with loved ones.
And about the Enterprise …… as always nice additions!
Regards, Peter

Excellent work Grant!. It's always nice to get away and recharge every now and again. The problem is that when you get back and look with fresh eyes, you see things that you missed!
