Oliver Cromwell, POF ,Scale 1:48 by Lawrence [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hello Ship Mates

Well today the little fellows and I have finally finished rigging the 18 cannons on the gun deck. I still can not believe that I survived over 100 cannons on the HMS Victory just a few years ago when these 18 cannons seamed to take forever to complete and rig. Now we can start on some of the easier things that are secretly a bit more enjoyable. We got 6” + of snow yesterday that we blew from the driveway and the walks, big surprise this AM as it snowed all night and earlier today giving us another 5” + but will wait until tomorrow to blow with my garden tractor as she is low on gas and I do not care to go out driving especially when I do not have to.

Hello Ship Mates

We ran into a bit of a problem when we decided to add Tung N’ Teak Oil to the main gun deck. For some strange reason that I fail to understand it all went very blotchy, light and dark spots all over and looked like the pits. We then decided to scrape and re-sand the gun deck again and give it a couple of coats of satin varnish. We think it came out not to bad with yet a few darker spots showing trough, but much nicer that that off the pear wood.IMG_5648.JPGIMG_5649.JPGoil on the pear

On a more even note we framed in the Quarter Deck and now are tackeling the Coamings for the companion way and also for the three gratings that will be built later on, but first we must add our Led Lighting to this deck.

Wonderful work, I find the rope work excellent, which I just find very difficult. When I work with cord it seems no life in it. How do you get it to be so pliable and easier to use.
Paul
Hello Paul, Welcome to my build log, I am pleased that you like my rope work. This I am afraid is what my Admiral left me in her Old Sewing Room when I took over and converted it into my Old Ship Yard. The Breaching Ropes are from her stock of an off white and with a fare bit of nylon in it, and it is around 0.60mm that seams to fit in rather nice. The tackle ropes are also from her sewing room and they are what we call a button thread and also in a off white and it' size is around 0.33mm and rather pliable. I hope this helps you out, it might pay you to look into your Admirals sewing kit.

We had rather a busy week in the Old Ship Yard. We completed the lighting for the Great Room and also for the after-gun deck. We installed the Coamings for the three after grating and also for the Ladder way to the Gun Deck. We planked the Quarter Deck with Castello Box Wood and recut the whole for the Mizzen Mast, last but not the least we wired our Binnacle with its Led Lamp and installed it just behind the Mizzen Mast.

Regards Lawrence

Hello Lawrence! The deck planking looking really good, Do you plan to imitate treenails\plugs? Another special word about the binnacle. At this size, it is very well made and super detailed! Just Awesome.
Hello Jim, Thank you very much for your visit and also for your very kind words and comments. I was planning on doing this deck in treenails but now I am afraid to for cutting the many wires just below the deck, so that leaves me with the imitation ones, well I can live with that.

Now the real fun is about to begin all over again and that is adding detail to our little ship the Oliver Cromwell. This AM we have cut our styles and the treads to build a set of stairs from the Gun Deck to the Quarter Deck. Then a coat of varnish and then installed them in the Companion way Coaming.

Thanks for your pleasant reply, it must have been a magical sewing room has I do like the way your ropes drape over the gun carriages in such a realistic way. I have to buy my timber, fittings, rope etc from a lovely company in Cornwall UK so the ropes I'm using on my decks of HMS Victory are .5mm, 1mm and 2mm but they seem to have starch built into them! how do I make them pliable like your magic ones are?
Keep warm Paul

Hello Paul, Thanks for your very kind words. I have dealt for years now with Cornwall Model Boats but the last few years I have leaned towards The Model Dock Yard even though they are a smaller company. As they list items in stock and over at C.M.B. they do not leaving me with double shipping. Yes I did enjoy HMS Victory a very enjoyable build, she holds a lot of very fond memories. Yes the Hemp Rope that these company's sell is rather hard to work with, You could try wetting it to soften it up a bit, or better still head over to your sewing store and get some off white Crochet Twine, it comes in many thicknesses and will work much better for rigging all of those cannons. For the Rigging hemp douse a great job. I told my Admiral what you said and she just smiled. Well attach a few picture of my HMS Victory taken a couple of years ago outside on our deck for a dedusting.

Hello Ship Mates

We have spent the last couple of days sawing out the Gratings Strips for the three grates on the forward Quarter Deck. Cleaning them up and assembling them into the Gratings. This time however we decided to trim them out with thin strips of cherry wood. We thought it would make them look nicer but I do believe the gratings looked much more realistic with these trimmings omitted. This we may change in the future but for now we will see if we can live with it.

Hello Lawrence, I really like the contrast between the grating themself and coamings! Thumbsup
Hello Jim, Yes I do like the contrast in colours between the Swiss Pear and that of the Cherry wood, still thinking that I may replace those gratings that are lined in cherry, but we will see.
Regards Lawrence

Welldone. Your grating looks nice: not oversized. Have you tried to simulate the nails?
G.
Hello Gilles, Thank you for your visit to my build log and also for your nice comments. Yes I will be simulating the tree nails, I had wanted to use the real thing but with all of my wiring below deck I am afraid to.
Regards Lawrence

Yesterday and today the little fellows and I have been building the two Elm Pumps that sit on the Gun Deck just behind the Main Mast. We cut the pumps brackets and lever out of an old piece of ½” or 12.70mm copper pipe that turned out to be very interesting for such a small sets of pumps.
