Caldercraft HMS Victory 1:72 by Gilbertm

Hallo Gilbert,

Hi Will
Thanks for your message.
I don't speak Dutch but Google translate helped me and I basically understood your message.
Indeed I follow your build and see the high bar you are putting. This is great.
I am working on lighting the inside of the ship right now and a bit struggling in determining the best approach. But it should come together quite soon.
Let's keep it up
Cheers

Hello all
I have unmounted all the parts (bulkheads, deck, dummy barrel strips) that I had previously dry-fitted and have first glued all bulkheads.
I then installed the lower dummy barrel strip and inserted the LEDs on the left side of each gun port. I used 3mm 12V warm white LEDs that I have installed in parallel. I took particular care when soldering the connections since they will not be accessible moving forward.
Some pictures below.

Next I am going to intall the lower gunport lights on the port side and install the middle gun deck.

Cheers

Good luck Gilbert. I will watch also and love the idea of lights. Presently I am fitting the quarterdeck on my Victory with grates.

This is coming along really nicely. The lighting is a great idea too, I wish I thought of it, but really I wish I could do something like that.

Hello friends
I have finished adding LED light for the two cannon decks and have also added LEDs to the middle gun decks so that light can be seen thru the various openings from the upper decks (gratings, stairs).

I have not yet added lights for the officer's quarter but wires are ready at the stern.

Let me now move back to the instructions and continue on the hull

Cheers

Hello all
I have added the 3 gunport patterns on both sides of the hull.
One element worth mentioning is the fact that these patterns are quite large and care has to be taken in order to precisely glue the top and bottom parts for each bulkhead. A pin at the top and one at the bottom is absolutely necessary.
I have also created a balsa filler block at the bow. The Jotika documentation does not mention that but I believe this is needed in order to insure smooth planking.

I believe I can now start first layer planking ...

Good afternoon Gilbert. At 1;72 this must be a big model. I know how large my 1:78 is. I like the way Caldercraft has built the gunport patterns. So many Victory kits got these wrong, even my Mantua, so this is cool. Cheers Grant

Hello Gilbert
It may be the photo but the lower, middle and upper decks' gun ports all look to be the same size rather than different at each deck level. Are they the same or different for each deck?

From The Elements and Practice of Naval Architecture or a first rate.
Gun deck 2'9" up and down X 3'5" (11.6mmX14.5mm)
Middle deck 2' 9" X 3' 3"
Upper deck 2;9"" X 3' 0"
Just curious about this.
Thanks Gilbert, much appreciated
Allan
