HMS Ontario 1:48 by Maris Stella

So I've made some big mistakes with this kit.
From all the build logs I've read, seems that most have stopped this build when they have to install the transom. So I planked the 3D printed one and had the bright idea of installing it first before any planking / bull works that way the planking would hold it in place. I put it on the bracket on the stern post, positioned it on the gun deck and filed and sanded it to fit. Then used a sliding T square to get the correct angle from the drawings.
Anyways it ended up being way too high as the upper deck was hitting the transom in the middle of the windows. And the side badges were pointing upwards at about a 30 degree angle.

So I had to break it off the back and start over.
Everything from the side cabin doorways back came off with it.
This time I used the wooden transom from the kit. Now at least everything seems to line up nicely.

Finished the hull and although not perfect and after lots of filling and sanding it looks okay.
Sprayed a coat of primer on it and now I can finish cutting out the gun ports.View attachment 539768

Has the ship's hull been covered? The hull of the bow section needs to be reduced.

Yes the hull is covered. Not sure what you mean by reduced, sorry

Thanks
Neil

I am not sure what he means by reduced bow, but the knee of the head should be tapered to about 5" or 6" at the forward end. An example of a British 28 gun ship shows it better than words.

Moving forward with this build, the transom fits good and also the top deck (not attached) and have started building the side badges. The transom and side badges still need some finish sanding and painting. But I think I should put the wales on first.

Continuing on I've finished the 2 side badges and done some painting. I'm using red ochre and yellow ochre but I'm not happy with the yellow so I mixed it with cadmium yellow and a bit of white and thinking it looks fine. Next will be to mark the water line and finish painting the hull.

I was thinking how much the colours look like the old Toronto Street cars and it's pretty close.

I've planked the top deck but not sure if I'm going to do treenails or some other affect to mimic them. Also painted the waterline and installed the rudder. Think I will spray a coat of varnish on the hull before removing the tape.

Thanks for looking.

Hello, l've finished the bilge pumps. Though a bit disappointed as the parts list says to use 6 mm dowels 25 cm long but there were none supplied with the kit. I only found some that I had that were 5 mm so wrapped them with some walnut veneer the sanded to fit the rings. I didn't like the way it looked with the photo etched brass hoops so I made some wooden ones. I think the spouts are a bit too long so will trim a bit off as well.IMG_20250928_145142863_MP~2.jpg
