Good afternoon everyone on the last day of 2025. It’s been a hectic but fruitful year and may 2026 bring all you guys plenty of joy.

I got tired of planking so decided to build the main cabin wall and doors. I used the kit parts here. The only real work was bevelling the panels. For some decoration I scraped some pattern into the dividing columns - definitely a little poetic license.

I still need to cut and include the glass in the windows.

Happy New year.

A nice cabin wall, Grant. You can leave 2025 behind that wall. Wish you all the best for the New Year.
Regards, Peter

Absolutely stunning !

Hello Gentlemen. Apologies for the late reply - we have been having a fun time down here in Cape Town and I neglected to follow up with you all.
I guess in the case of the model, it would all depend on just how visible the wall surfaces in the cabin are, once everything is planked up. I seem to recall that you are leaving quite a bit of planking off, sooooo ;)
Hi Russ. When I started I decided that if I am going to spend time on any part of this ship it must be visible. So cut always, haphazard decking etc is the way. Whether it turns out cool or not we will have to see. We will see the wall so I will try it both ways once I progress to that stage and decide which way looks best. Thanks, I always appreciate your input into my attempts.
I love it, Grant. Happy New Year to too!
Good morning Daniel. Thank you very much indeed. May 2026 bring all of us plenty of modelling achievements and fun.
I seem to have dropped behind checking in on quite a few threads. However, yours never fails to impress when I catch up.

I was going to try to emulate your clever 2025/2026 image in the sand by writing in the snow but we had a warm period at +1c so it’s all gone ROTF. A very Happy New Year to you and your family Grant.
Good morning Roger. Thank you for the compliment and encouragement. Is that normal for the east coast to have no snow at the beginning of Jan? It would have looked “lekker” in the snow.
I love the raised panel effect, Grant. Well played. And best wishes to you and your gang this new year. Looking forward to seeing the wedding pictures!
Hi Paul. Thank you kindly. In a few days I give my daughter away to a young man who I like a whole lot. You know the feeling- I’m super proud. I will definitely send you guys some pics.

Thank you Peter. 2025 was a good one, knee and back issues aside. I’m looking forward to this year and hopefully we will all own it. May some more two wheel adventures await you and I.
Beautiful paneling work, my friend. Are you planning something special in good old Melkbosstrand for the New Year?
Thank you Heinrich I am bit late in my reply- apologies. We went to my mates house and had a braai (of courseROTF). It was good but I was the nominated driver……at least I didn’t have a hang over on the 1st. I made buddies with Balley - such a cool dog.

Absolutely stunning !
Thank you Jeff- much appreciated
Your crafts never fail to impress me.
Happy New Year. :D
Thank you
All the best for 2026.
…..and you guys too Graham
Have a great 2026 Grant.
With the results on your build you are off to a good start of the new year, very nice work.
Thank you Maarten. I have a feeling that 2026 will be a really good year and I wish this on you and all my friends here on SOS.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Roger. Thank you for the compliment and encouragement. Is that normal for the east coast to have no snow at the beginning of Jan? It would have looked “lekker” in the snow.

End of December through early January is quite erratic with snow one day, slightly warmer the next, freezing rain then a deep freeze the next, it’s messy, take your pick :D. We had snow Christmas Day, which was very festive but gone shortly after. It’s white on the ground today with a temp of -14c but it’ll be gone in a couple of days. Mid Jan through February will be the heaviest snow and stormiest weeks. When it’s feet deep it’s a pain.

This is where I stop the weather report and yearn for your weather at this time of year ROTF.

(That beach photo you took was cleverly done, washing away 2025 but with 2026 intact).

Good morning Roger. That does sound “messy”. We have had a more than usual windy summer so far which is great for the kite boarders but not so much for fires which have been regular. Luckily nothing too bad. We have had some peach of days and I think like you guys we revel in summer as our winter are wet and blustery.

Ahh I wish I could take credit for the photo. It was a digital card someone sent me which I liked a lot and have used for my New Year wishes.
Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. Some planking on the lower counters and stern timbers.

As some of you are aware I decided at the start of this build to show a view of any work I spent time on. In this regard I once again made some cut away planks around one of the gunports on the lower stern counters.

As always still WIP.

IMG_7493.jpegIMG_7498.jpegIMG_7500.jpeg
I tested some linseed oil on the lower planking….I know testing should be done off the ship….,SpeechlessROTF. I chose this area as nothing else is to be glued on and we know that glue and oil don’t go well.

I am really happy with the result. It is so much better on Cherry than Polyurethane. I am even considering sanding down my frames and applying oil.

The pictures do not give the oiled planking credit but it is awesome on the eye.
Cheers Grant

Nice work, Grant. And of course I can appreciate your use of linseed oil. Also on your model it looks great.:)

Looks wonderful and the metal pieces look perfect size .
Thank you Jeff. The metal pieces from the kit look really good so far. It is pleasing that I don’t have to cut too much brass.
Oh, I don't know ... the pictures look pretty darn good from my house! Well done!
Good morning Russ. Thank you. Oils definitely make the wood look better. Makes me very happy :D.
Boom! That's looks great, Grant. And a little bit of peek-a-boo shows what might otherwise be hidden...
Hi Paul. Thank you kindly. Yep for me that is a boom. The little peak—boos I have scattered around so are appealing to me….hopefully as I continue the overall look and feel doesn’t look too disjointed.
Your oil finish really does look good Grant. I will be experimenting with oils, thinners and waxes for my Zebek.
Thanks Daniel. From what I have seen Oil on pear looks amazing. At the moment I haven’t done too much experimenting and just going with linseed slightly diluted. Very happy so far.
Excellent young man. It is a great feeling when you discover a combination that just works.
That is a true story Heinrich. It always feels good when you change a method and it is a big improvement.
Nice work, Grant. And of course I can appreciate your use of linseed oil. Also on your model it looks great.:)

Thanks Peter. If I remember correctly you also used linseed on your Bluenose. That came out beautifully. Cheers Grant
