1/30 HMS Royal Caroline Build

Another discrepancy with the kit is the Knee Deadwood!!!!! After you plank the Hull, you are supposed to glue on a Obtuse triangle to each side of the Keel at the stern (See brochure pictures). This IS NOT correct!!! Planking always covers the Knee & Deadwood & Keelsen down to the Keel on this type of Hull.012a.jpg20210521_212921.jpg20210522_225308.jpg20210522_225343.jpg20210522_230256.jpg20210522_230222.jpg20210522_230230.jpgc88b107c354a6110fa71270a7c999525.jpgmain-qimg-ae210419225a2cf933335c5fd88bf64d.gifOR 2479.jpg

I will be supplying the negative & positive power for the all the lighting buy using the 2 all-thread post that go through the base & pedestals. I used solid wire copper core. Not sure yet if I will go with a 3 volt or a dollhouse 12 volt type set up yet. Honestly, Initially, I wasn't going to wire up any lighting because I am old school and the model will be in a case and no fingers should ever get close enough to cause possible damage by turning on/off some type of switch for lights. Heck, 100 years from now, they may not even have today's light bulbs??????
I didn't think to get any wiring pics but you can catch glimpses of the wiring in upcoming photos.View attachment 234632View attachment 234633View attachment 234634
Great photos

Hi Rick,

Excellent job so far and your years of experience show in these photos. I totally agree that it's not a race to finish the model as quickly as possible. It's the journey that counts. I'll be following your build for sure.

Take care,

Bob Hunt

And THAT dear friends is how you single-plank a model ship hull. Beautiful work, 100% symmetrical and exquisitely executed!
Thank you so much for the kind Words my Friend!!! I have learned to be patient when it comes to planking & if I make a mistake, just make a new Plank(s), no matter how frustrating it is!! Guess my old man age is catching up to me, hehehehehehehehehehehe
I am looking forward to seeing how the Planking looks after the Tree Nails are added & then the final Hull fairing completed and wood sealer applied????

Forecastle Plank work has commenced & BEWARE fellow ship modelers when you get to this point!!!! You will need to trim off approx 5mm from the top of the Bulkhead frames with the Hanging Knee on each side. The Forecastle should have a very slight Tilt to Midships and in addition, the Forecastle Wood Deck piece (#11) needs to be curved equally from Port to Starboard. If you don't cut down the Bulkhead Top Ends, the Forecastle Deck will be to high & really mess things up when it comes time to placing the carvings at the Bow!!!!!!20210525_222410.jpg20210525_222439.jpg20210525_222518.jpg20210525_222528.jpg20210527_001404.jpg

ATTENTION ALL BUILDERS OF THIS KIT---

No matter what skill level you are at building this kit at, always remember to have fun 1st & foremost!!!!!!!!! With that being said,
as I mentioned in my opening monologue about the Chinese plans not being to the correct scale, I have spent numerous days and many of hours measuring the kit plans and the model ship itself against the plans in the book- Anatomy of the Ship (AOS) 'The Royal Yacht Caroline 1749" by Sergio Bellabarba & Giorgio Osculati and a set of construction drawings in my possession from the Royal Museum in Greenwich, England. The actual "Measured" Deck length of the Royal Caroline is 90'1". The model scales out to a "Measured" Deck length of 95'5". The model kit is 5.4 cm to long!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen other post and many, many, many, comments concerning issues with the Forecastle Deck not matching up to the plans, Foremast, Main & Mizzen Holes not matching up, Stove Funnel Hole in wrong location, Grate Opening not the correct size opening, etc, etc. Some builders have even gone to great lengths cutting the Hull in Half & making the Hull even longer!!! With the Plans not matching up to the model and having different scale plans within the same kit make things very hard & confusing to say the least!!! This is the biggest point when modelers get frustrated to the point of no return but don't give in or up!!! The model will still be a great Art Piece!!! I wanted to clarify this scale issue because the kit plans don't show or give the modeler any reference points for the distances needed for the carvings, gun port spacing & Deck Trim and needed plank lengths for the Forecastle Planks in the Bow section, not to mention the rest of the Hulls Carving Locations (Using the Kit Plans only makes things more confusing & Difficult). The cardboard template provided for the gun port, window locations IS NOT Accurate!!!!!! I have made a written Record of measurements, up to this point, for the Gun Port locations & Forecastle Bow Carvings for References if anyone should or want this information.

The model kit is 5.4 cm to long!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now this I find really interesting information and to me it all adds up to the enigmatic character of the Luhaiqingkong R/C kit. I have made no secret of the fact that I regard this as one of the best kits of the market, but its hull length has now both been called: "too short" and "too long" - both by reputable builders who have each interpreted historical sources in a seemingly different way. What a fascinating hobby we have chosen to indulge ourselves in! :)

Hello Heinrich,
I think & believe the problem lies in the fact that the producer Lu Hai Qing Kong directly copied 3 of the one-to-one plans from the book - Anatomy of the Ship (AOS) "The Royal Yacht Caroline 1749" by Sergio Bellabarba & Giorgio Osculati . Only 2 of the full size plans - the placement of carvings and a rigging layout are not from the book! ALL 5 plans are of a different Scale and ALL 5 plans do not match the actual model. With that being said, who knows what scale plans are in each individual kit (Some Bigger & Some Smaller)????????????
I do think the carvings and the kit contents are superb and they should be considering how expensive this kit is but if the Chinese want to be taken seriously in the world of model ship kits and be competitive, they must (in my opinion)---
A) Stop copying other makers kits (Plagiarism)!
B) Create their own unique kits!
C) Create more comprehensive plans & Drawings in their Kits (The instructions are TERRIBLE)!
D) Massively upgrade their plans with proper nautical terminology and proper English!!
Still, at the end of the day, I am so very happy to have been Blessed by the BIG Man upstairs to be able to get this kit and as Our Fellow modeler Maarten said in a nutshell-- This is whats makes building this kit exciting & fun!
