1761 - Action of 17 July 1761

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 74-gun two-decker ship of the line (circa 1760), built with a 'bread and butter' core, planked and finished in the Georgian style. Model is partially decked, fully equipped, rigged and mounted on its original baseboard. At this scale the model depicts a ship with a gun deck length of 166 feet by 47 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 1600 burden. A noticeable feature is the raised position of the channels that support the shrouds above the upper gun deck. The rigging is modern and was fitted in 1976. There is a possibility that the model may depict 'Thunderer', or a similar ship, 'Hercules'. During the 18th century, attempts were made to find the optimum size for a ship of the time to carry the maximum armament on two decks. By 1757, the 74-gun ship of about 1600 tons burden was evolved and this, with minor modifications, was to become the standard medium sized fighting ship for the next 50 years.

1805 - The Battle of Cape Finisterre

'Admiral Sir Robert Calder's action off Cape Finisterre, 22 July 1805'. Vice-Admiral Calder’s squadron intercepted the Franco-Spanish fleet under Admiral Villeneuve off north-western Spain, as it returned from its diversionary voyage to the West Indies just before Trafalgar. At a time when Britain had become used to Nelsonic victories, Calder’s failure to engage it decisively led to his formal censure and he was never given another command. This shows the day after the action, 24 July. British frigates have Calder’s two prizes, the Firme and the San Raphael, under tow on the right and the damaged Windsor Castle, too, on the left. Calder’s fleet is in formation in the centre and the departing enemy in the distance

1759 - Keel of HMS Victory (100) laid down at Chatham Dockyard

Scale: 1:180. A skeleton model of the ‘Victory’ (1765), a 100-gun, three-decker ship of the line. The model is depicted on the slipway under construction. Although the model has not been positively identified, the dimensions agree with those of the ‘Victory’. See also SLR0514, SLR0516 and SLR0520.


Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan with sternboard decoration, sheer lines with inboard detail, decoration and figurehead, and longitudinal half-breadth for Victory (1765), a 100-gun First Rate, three-decker. Even though the plan is dated 1830, the plan illustrates the vessel prior to her 1800-3 'Large Repair' at Chatham Dockyard. The plan commemorates the death of Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson despite the plan representing the ship prior to when she was his flagship in 1803. There are also differences in gunport layouts when compared to the plan signed by Thomas Slade in 1759.

1804 - Launch of HMS Swiftsure

Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan, sheer lines, and longitudinal half-breadth proposed (and approved) for 'Swiftsure' (1804) and 'Victorious' (1808), both 74-gun Third Rate, two-deckers, both to be built at Bucklers Hard by Messrs B & E Adams. The plan also shows alterations to the rudder on 'Swiftsure', while she was at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1815-6. The alterations were suggested by the ship's Captain - Captain William Henry Webly/Webley, appointed 20 September 1814 [Captain seniority: 29 April 1802]. Signed by John Henslow [Surveyor of the Navy, 1784-1806] and William Rule [Surveyor of the Navy, 1793-1813]. NMM, Progress Book, volume 6, folio 130 states that 'Swiftsure' (1804) was at Portsmouth Dockyard between 18 August 1815 and September 1816.

1710 - HMS Kent (70) captured Superbe (64)
HMS Superb was a 64-gun third-rate ship of the line of the British Royal Navy. She had previously been Le Superbe, a 56-gun warship of the French Navy, until her capture off Lizard Point by HMS Kent in July 1710. Commissioned into the Royal Navy in September 1710, HMS Superb served throughout Queen Anne's War and the War of the Quadruple Alliance, during which she participated in the destruction of the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Cape Passaro in 1718. She was broken up in 1732.



1967 - USS Forrestal fire
a fire broke out on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. An electrical anomaly had caused the discharge of a Zuni rocket on the flight deck, triggering a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War. The ship survived, but with damage exceeding US$72 million, not including the damage to aircraft. Future United States Senator John McCain and future four-star admiral and U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Ronald J. Zlatoper were among the survivors.

HMS Swiftshure 1673 - This is a ship portrait viewed from before the port beam. The ship is flying a Union flag at a staff on her forecastle as at a launching. Her mainmast, however, to the height of the fourth woulding, has been drawn in. The ‘Swiftsure’ was launched at Harwich on 8 April 1673. This is a faint offset based on an accurate original worked up with a little pencil on the figurehead and a crude wash along the side. It has also been strengthened in some places by pen-work.

The plan includes an annotation dated October 1817 relating to the ship (renamed Andromache in 1812) when she was fitted for service in Brazil under the command of Captain Shirriff [William Henry Shirreff, seniority: 15 November 1809]. The quarterdeck coamings were ordered to be raised and fitted with glass sashes as the ship was being ordered to 'a warm climate'.
