Tutorial A GUIDE on Lathe Basics

A very useful tutorial.
It should be remembered that each electrical device requires careful handling. It's easy to hurt yourself. If you are not sure about something, then do not do it and find out if it is possible to work this way. Perhaps when I find some time, I will make videos on the basics of metal turning :)
greetings

RC Model :)
This would be very good to have also such videos made by metal specialists - often the modelers need in the beginning really the basic information..... also maybe what and which tools are necessary and important when you buy a new machine.....

@Bobc622

1. Yes, you can contact www.sherline.com and purchase the DRO assembly as a full kit. Just make sure you are buying the DRO for the lathe.
2. Yes, you have to start out with a Mast that has a diameter a little larger to square off the ends. I have a video showing this using a sherline Mill

This is the link to the DRO full package

Here is my video showing how I square off the ends of a Mast for the Mast Step. You can fast forward to get to the real part.

General question for wonabe lathe user for brass. Is there a practical difference between HSS or carbide tipped tools?
Before committing to a new machine which I may not use too often, I want try to adapt my 6in1 unimat (which works for wood ). I can slow it down with a "dimmer" switch.

Here you go, Stuart

Tried out the 6in1 Unimat Classic on brass rod. USELESS. Too much movement of tool-holding unit (whatever its called).
A new lathe will be nice, but not a priority now.

The Unimat you mentioned is more a toy than a tool. We do have tools called toys, but this is the exact opposite. :cool:

Sorry to side track but is anyone else having trouble with the sound on this video? I also went to watch it on YouTube and the adds work fine but there is no sound when the real video comes on.
Hi Don, I just checked again the link I posted and it works as expected (with sound). if still trouble, see if you can use subtitles

Yup, did that. I think it's something in my computer but I can't figure it out. It just seems to pick random times to not have sound. It's new too. I just wanted to check to make sure it wasn't everyone having problems with this video. I'll have to wait for one of my grand daughters to visit and get them to fix it :) :)
