Well since my 1/350 Lusitania project has been indefinitely suspended as the parts I'm waiting for never arrived I figured I would try out a few 1/600 ships and see what that's all about.

My initial reaction is that I'm not a fan. I can't paint any detail on a scale this small, and most everything is already molded to the model. I really had a hard time painting the windows, they came out quite bad but they're just too small for me. I have 3 in this scale, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary, and Mauritania. I think I'll do the two Queens just to fill up some time.

I have a 1/450 QE2 which unfortunately also has a lot of stuff already molded to the decks but at least it's not as tiny as these. I also have a 1/400 Queen Mary 2 which looks like a nice build with a lot of parts. I enjoy 1/350 scale and would not like to go much smaller than that on a ship.

On this Queen Elizabeth I tried painting the windows three different times with three different techniques and none of them worked. I finally said that's it, it will just have to be good enough. The painting all looks excellent, Chris. Speaking to the problem of the windows, though, one approach would be to first paint in the darker window color into the window recess. Be as clean as you can about it. And then, come back and lightly dry-brush the raised frame with white, to clean up any over-runs.

Thanks. I initially did mask off everything except the recessed areas and sprayed them black. I tried a couple of other things that failed, some of these windows are tiny. Eventually I took the smallest white paint pen I could find and barely dabbed away at the raised sections of the windows. I had to wipe the tip of the pen off every time before doing this as the paint would flood the recess if I didn't. Your suggestion sounds like a better option. I just keep experimenting until I find something acceptable. This scale is a lot harder than I thought it would be!

Nice article, thank you. I get the feeling that the Queen Mary has always gotten more praise and publicity but I actually think the Queen Elizabeth was a nicer looking ship. I'm not considering interiors but I think the Queen Elizabeth exterior had much nicer lines in all respects, plus she was larger. Overlooked to some extent in my opinion considering she was the largest liner for many decades. Maybe it's because the Queen Mary is still with us. Queen Elizabeth and Normandie, too close to call for me but my two favorites. I also thought the Aquitania was a beautiful ship.

Thanks Wilfred, I am enjoying reading through your articles. Great stuff. I have waiting to build a few that you went over. I have the 1/570 Queen Mary, The 1/400 Queen Mary 2 Platinum Edition, and I also have the 1/450 QE2 from Revell. The QM2 looks like quite a task to build. I also have the Trumpeter 1/200 Titanic with all the detail kits and I'm thinking I don't know which will be more of a challenge to build, the QM2 or Titanic. Both will take lots of time.
