I'm in my 60's and remember growing up with Airfix. As far as model ships went they pretty much had the market back then. From memory my first was the HMS Ark Royal and her Tribal escort. Pretty sure I built that one at least twice, along with Hood, Warspite and or course Bismarck. Also had a soft spot for liners, oddly enough after the film The Poseidon Adventure came out, building the Queen Elizabeth, SS Canberra, SS France and of course the Queen Mary (by Revell I think). Back in those early days, I don't think my warships even got paint, just glued together out of the box.Thank you for being so receptive. If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask.
Proper glue, some sheets of plastic card, good quality brushes and a sharp scalpel can take you a long way without costing a fortune.
Many of the over molded items can be improved immensely by careful scraping..
Good references are essential.
All other kits from this Airfix range have many possibilities.
I built 'Warspite' and 'Repulse', converting each to original WW1 configurations, which needed some serious research but in the end delighted me, the original kits became unrecognisable.
