Did you or your dad have wooden hatch covers on either of the ships you sailed on?
Liberty ships, C-2 cargo ships, and older vessels had wooden hatch covers (called hatch boards back then) supported by removable steel hatch beams. The hatch covers on the C-5 I sailed were steel, as were those of the C-3's Dad sailed on.
