Armed Pinnace 1800 - Panart 1:16

The older kits that were modified before 2000, seem to have been done right and were modified when they first started doing laser cutting with photo etched parts. The newer ones that got modified seem to have not been assembled by the company to see if the changes worked. Thus, the problems you and Donnie have seem to be a result of the new people that now run Mantua and do not check for correctness. The ones that have been revised with the step by step instruction and pictures of each step, like the Sovereign are the only ones that seem to be correct.
Hi, I just want to add to this convo - I bought this kit about 20 yrs ago. This kit even then had no English instructions, parts missing and the deck part never fitted correctly and had to be modified to get a good fit. I nvr got to fully finish it - although I am about to embark on a semi scratch build kit bash of it. I have recently emailed Panart and asked for a quote for shipping a new model kit over to NZ for me … but in the process decided I may try a bit of a scratch effort with parts taken from the kit I can't make.

Does anyone know of any info on the original ship (Lancia Armata)? i.e. keel, rib and planking setup etc - haven't been able to find anything on internet so far myself...
When I start this project, I'm hoping to make it with full ribs etc rather than fake them as the kit does.. thnx in advance!

I have recently bought an armed pinnace from an antique shop.

It have been clumsily put together and is missing some parts.

I have no plans to work off and I would like to fashion a tiller.

An anyone tell me the dimension I need to work to, or a photo of that part of the plan would help.

Thank you in advance.
John

That boat looks suspiciously like an armed French Longboat. Ancre has published two monographs about these boats. Look them up on their website. I believe that it’s ancre.fr

Thanks John
PS:I'll buy some wood and have a bash at making one. Thanks again.

I used 4mm walnut as I did for the gun carriage rather than the ply. This was my first kit and I think it produces a nice looking model. I made a few errors but overall I’m pleased. Some photos attached.

Hi Stuart,
Thank you for the information.
I agree its a lovely looking model.
I like some of the real looking touches, like wear marks on some of the fittings.
Thank you also for the photos they will prove very useful.
Best Regards
John

John,
If you are interested in English pinnaces there are scantlings from David Steel circa 1800 that give dimensional information for all the parts of various types and sizes of boats that you might find useful. They can be found in The Elements and Practice of Naval Architecture, Boats of Men of War and Scantlings of Royal Navy Ships. There are also about 500 contemporary drawings of pinnaces at RMG that you might find to be helpful if you are talking about a scratch build. https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections Two examples of contemporary plans for an armed pinnace are below.

Hi,
I am currently working on this model, and have no logical explanation for Grätings on such a boat.
What can be the job on a rowing boat, does anyone have an idea?
Thank’s Uwe
