Buccaneer - Second Build

My Albatros didn’t come with that stain as it’s not used on that ship. Odd that you received it in your set. On the Buccaneer it’s used on the upper bulwarks. The picture is from OcCre’s website.

I purchased my Albatros kit and paint set separately from Amazon.com / Earthmark. If you look on Amazon, there are two paint sets listed for the Albatros. One is 5 colors, Varnish, Tinte Sapelli, Dark Brown, Black, and Gold. The other set is 9 colors and also includes the metal primer, Tinte Nogol, Copper, and Judea. Both sets are priced the same. No wonder I had questions about which paint colors to use.

Now I know where my Judea stain went .

I completed the second planking today. These were the two most difficult strakes. I spent a lot of time sanding them to get them to fit. Overall I’m pleased with the results. It’s much better than my first attempt. Tomorrow I’ll work on the stern.

Does anyone have any tips for blackening the brass parts?

To blacken the brass, try either Birchwood Casey Brass Black, liver of Sulphur, or any other products used for doing this. Just google how to blacken brass.

Thank you. I’ll get on Amazon and see what I can find. On my last build I tried ammonia. It worked but the brass became extremely brittle.

I ordered some liver of Sulphur today (thanks Mthomas) to blacken the brass parts. It won’t be here before I’m ready to place the rudder so I’m just going to continue forward with the build. Today I got the stern completed. The instructions called for the strakes to be installed vertically, but that usually leaves me with a millimeter or less on the ends. That’s more trouble than it’s worth - so I placed them horizontally.

Be careful with chemicals, some make toxic gases as they work, and use gloves, and clean, clean, and sand parts to get any sealant or grime off the brass before treating.

Your planking looks really nice. And your extra sanding on the last one really paid off as you can’t tell that it frustrated you. Great job / told you you’d be passing me before I get back to mine in October.

I have a bottle of Brass Black but have not used it as of yet. Good luck with the liver.

The Liver of Sulphur arrived today. No instructions. I’m going to have to do some research. I’ll sit on my porch and use some scrap material when I test this out.

I spent the day placing the rudder. It ain’t pretty - I had a hell of a time getting it installed. Any advice for future builds is appreciated. The balcony is done and I’m please with the way it turned out. I stained and varnished the balcony area with Judea stain since I won’t be able to get to that area once the balcony is installed - it’s just tacked on for the picture since I still need to install the door and windows. Tomorrow I’ll start on the handrails.

Looking great! I agree with you rudder was difficult to get installed. Would also be glad to hear advice for future builds.
