Build Log. HMS VICTORY ANATOMY by Artesania

I kind of figured that out after the fact. What fooled me is the kit manual which are videos shows in a couple places the out line of the liners under the paint. So I assumed the liners were deep enough. Should have found them and tested before I did the planking.
This kit also has top liners, so 3 parts. They’re kind of a pain to install. I measured the liners and as I do the upper decks I will add the 1.25mm to the planking ends on both sides and the top down as well. I decided to make a jig I can use for the planking section. . I have to say this part of the kit Artesania’s manual is lacking.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I kind of figured that out after the fact.
This is the norm for many of us, and is never-ending. :) It is a good day when a mistake I have made is spotted and pointed out to me as then I will avoid it on the next project.

The liners on top are a common mistake on the majority of kits. If I cannot find this kind of thing in a book, the photos of contemporary models at RMG, Preble Hall, and other maritime museums are sometimes easier to study to find these kinds of details. FWIW, the stops/linings were no more than about 1.5" thick (0.45mm at 1:84 scale)
Cheers

Definitely been a stay inside kind of week. Freeze the balls off a brass monkey. I know the true ship fans know what a brass monkey is.
I’ve been working on two things, both lengthy tedious endeavors. I have the first 30 cannon tackled and 1/2 of the hull planked. Also had to flush a tankless water heater and replace a control board in the barely used dishwasher. Haha.

Finished the hull, putty and 2 coats of primer.
Started on the wales today and touched up the gun ports after first strip of paint. I’m fairly happy with the hull. Not great but good enough for copper plates and paint.
Copper plates are coming up shortly.

Thought I would drop a quick update. I’ve been working on the copper playing. I started on the back which is the full hull side so I can figure out the best way to have a clean plating. I did figure out after I did a row that painting the hull copper instead of any other color really helps with the appearance of any slight imperfections of the plating. I also used some nail polish remover to clean up the plates. I think when I do the front side, while it is a smaller surface will look tight and clean with my learnings.

I took some time out of doing the copper plates. Truth be told I ran out. I thought 1554 would be enough but I am waiting on another pack of 518 to finish the hull and rudder.
In the mean time I did a little rope work on the lower gun deck for the anchors.
I also thought it was a good time to paint some of the little crew men. Oi.
I’m thinking my poor reading vision might be handy since I can’t see how much these little guys are messed up. Haha

My little figurine painting skills need work but I managed too finish a couple of them for the hold and the Orlop deck. Installing the lower gun deck guns. Wish I had smaller hands and better eyes but all in all they look pretty good. I used ropes of scale for the heavy lines.
Going to start whittling and painting the 20+ columns for this deck today.

Worked on various things since the last post. Finished installing the lower deck cannons.
Assembled the bilge pump handles.
Copper plates the rudder and installed it.
I took a shot at painting the middle deck quarters floor. Not great. Looks good from afar.

Well I am now trying to put the middle deck in. As you can see the Middle of the ship is a problem. Turns out the column heights at 24mm are quite wrong. They ended up being higher than the cross beams. I had to remove all the columns from the bilge pumps back toward the stern. Shorten them and reinstall them.
One set of bilge tanks was also too high and made Beam 10 higher than the others. So I had to carve a groove into the top of the tank and set the beam in place so it was the same height as the others.

The next issues was the black and white deck. It did not fit as it should. Not sure how that is possible since the other four pieces from the bow back fit perfect. Everything lined up. So I had to trim the blacks and white flooring at the section near the mast. This way the rudder actually was in the hole. I then created a couple of little jigs to help with the inner hull planking and insuring I would have better looking holes for the future middle deck cannons.
These little blocks allowed me to have 1.25 mm planking past the actual cutout for the cannons. Worked pretty well.

So last catch up for today. I was installing the ladders for the middle deck and what the heck. Three out of four of them hit a column on the lower deck. I for sure put the columns in the correct positions so it looks like someone dropped the engineering ball. I had to cut off part of the out legs to get them in. Dang dang.
I did get the next level of hull and painting accomplished over the weekend. All for now.

Looking good. How was working with this cooper, and where did you get it? I just started mine this past weekend.

These guys are out of CA. I got the plates from them. They are 1/72 scale I believe but I used them on my 1/84. They are Amati plates and I think they have other styles.
They are good to work with. The biggest trick is cutting them. I ended up using small sharp scissors.
