Hello everyone,

Just received my Charles Morgan kit form Model Expo. I placed the order this past Tuesday and it was delivered today. Three days. You can't beat that. I will say though that I live Florida, but you still can't beat that. Also, I have had my eye on the Charles Morgan for a long time, but when I saw the sale Model Expo was having on it, I snapped it up. The regular price is $469.99 and the sale price is $228.50. I have never been disappointed with Model Expo's customer service.

Lately I have been doing a lot research for an upcoming clipper build. While I am doing that, I will start the Charles Morgan.
BTW, when my wife saw the new kit, she asked "Are you going to finish that one". I don't know what she means, but challenge accepted.

The kit is very neatly packaged and all of the parts and pieces look nice. There are five large sheets of plans.

I have finally gotten my new shop set up. Now I will have A/C. This will allow me to spend more time building.

Good morning Bill, congratulations on your purchase and the good offer. I will follow your construction of the beautiful whaler Charles Morgan with interest.

a very interesting ship and kit - I will follow your progress and work with big interest

Nice purchase …..looking forward to the build, the information and the photos that accompany it. enjoy the process….

Hello Tobias, Uwek and BMT and thanks for following along. This will be my second Model Shipways kit build. The first was the Benjamin Latham schooner and it went together with no problems. I expect the same from this kit. There are also several very nice build threads on the internet that will help guide me along.

Good afternoon Bill. Nice! I will check in on your log. Enjoy. Cheers Grant

I have to give kudos to Model Shipways for their customer service and replacement parts. Unfortunately, I've had to go to them for missing pieces, and they were extremely prompt in getting them back to me.

Hello everyone,

Back from a wonderful vacation. Now it's time to get to work.
I spent some time getting the bulkheads ready to attach to the keel assembly. I had to a little bit of sanding to get all of the bulkheads into place. I took the bulkheads from my airconditioned shop to the garage for sanding and I noticed that in a very short time several of the bulkheads had bowed from the change in humidity. After sanding the bulkheads, I brought them back into the a/c and put some weights on them to take the bow out. I will let them sit for a day or so.

Bill,
Early predictions showing Helene will be taking dead aim at Tallahassee. If predictions become fact you are in for high humidity and lots of liquid sunshine.
Welcome to Florida and be safe

Actually I have lived in Florida for most of my life. When I was a kid living in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, we sat through 2 cat 3 and 1 cat 4 hurricanes. I lived the last 57 years in the Tampa Bay area and never got hit by a hurricane. After being in Tallahassee for 4 months, this will be my second hurricane.

Hello Bill,

Good luck with the build! I’ll be following your log and I hope soon to be following you in another way when I begin building my own kit of The Morgan. (That will be in the new year as I must finish my current project first.)

How long do you expect your build to take? I think there’s at least a year’s worth of entertainment for me in that small blue cardboard box.

Hello Smithy,

Thanks for following along. I will try not to make too much of a mess of it. If I can get myself into gear and not get too distracted, I figure it will take around a year or so. The "or so " is the most important part of the estimation.

Hello everyone,

I've gotten the all of the bulkheads in place and adjusted for correct fit. I have also cut in the rabbet and the bearding line. At this point, none of the bulkheads are glued into place. I wanted to make one more check of alignment before gluing them into place.

Good to see, that in this kit the distance between the bulkheads are relatively small, so you will be able to get a very good form as basis for your planking
Off course a good fairing wil be necessary, but I have no doubts
Will you make some filler blocks near stern and stem?

Hi Uwek,

Yes I am planning to add filler blocks for the stem and stern. I am also thinking about filling the deck area also.

Bill

I was able to get more than half of the bulkheads in place. They went in with no alignment necessary. This will be the last work I do for a few days. Tomorrow we are going to get hit by hurricane Helene. They say we will loose power for a while. I'll get back to work when the power comes back on.
