Agree, re pinch points. Harry said he figured the same.

And yeah...not a lot of detail out there. I wonder if the book about the New Zealand Junk recreation has pictures of the sails?

I think this junk model sails have nothing common with real junk sails...
And there is no sence to find answer what kind of sail is it?:)))
there are many photo of 19 - 20 centuries of real chineese junks and their sail, they look very much different compare to that kit's version... it looks like pure imagination of kit designer :))) !
I think we could digging more deeper in internet to find close,detailed vew of chineese junk old style sail construction

Yes I think you are right. They couild have made them much more realistic without a lot of effort.

Someone should make real sails for the kit!
 
They could have very easily moulded a plastic sail that was correct...jsut have the sail materialbound to the battens above and below. The batten does not go through the sail, it joins the sail pieces. Not hard to do properly...indeed, it is less complicated than what they provided...
 
I am not sure about these cargo things. I don't think they look very realistic. Maybe I will jsut use 2 or 3. Too many that are identical would look bad, I think. Perhaps add a couple of crates and some barrels for variety?

Any ideas on how to make these things look better? Or just reducing the number might be the way to go...

But kit design itself very strange looks... on the pictures posted above, all chineese junks look very fine and precision in design and accurate in appearance including rigging lines and spars and hull elements etc, not as this ugly desighned kit's hull...
how much this kit designer was drunk when he did it !? :))) !
 
I am about to start the rigging. I noted the wooldings on the masts and wondered the best way to highlight these. A query to Gemini had two versions of Gemini arguing with each other!

But I believe this has led to another fact - the kit shows bambook masts. Apparently they used wood (China fir and pine mostly) rather than bamboo. So it seems to be another error in the kit!

Junk writing never uses the word "woolding" apparently. But some support was provided for the larger masts to avoid cracking. They just did not use the name "wooldings". And this strengthening was only used for the larger junks and the larger masts. If I had known earlier I would have removed the moulded wooldings on the bamboo masts. But it is all painted now and I am OK to live with this...
