I looked at the Peterson book on rigging of ships and it shows the line first wrapped around the yard with probably a clove hitch before being reeved onto the blocks. That is probably the correct way to do it.

Hi Rob, the correct method is that the blocks attached to the yard should be double blocks. After the rope is wrapped around the yard, it must then be led through the sheave closest to the mast on the triple block above, and carried on from there.
