Cooperation in the construction of models of sail ships.

Ahh, Admiral Vernon, "Old Grog" responsible for Britain's greatest defeat (Before Dunkirk) at Cartagena which made the defeat of the Spanish armada look like a playground tussle. Wikipedia page Even George Washington's older brother took part in the humiliation. Yet the war of Jenkin's ear gets lost in history.
Great models by the way. I'm sorry I can't be a customer to you but I would be very interested in seeing you create a build log for this beautiful ship.

I understand you. But the fact of the matter is that a photo essay on the construction of this model can only happen if this project has a customer. This is causal determinism. I make my models only on request. They are not on my shelves. They all stand in the homes of their customers. The customer makes an order. I do. And during the construction of the model, I post photo reports on the pages of various forums. This project started several times. With different customers. But he stopped for various reasons. Not dependent on me. The project is very interesting. In the history of the model there are many interesting owners and partners. Her story intersected even with the history of the Krigstein brothers.

It is obvious you are a gifted\tallanted craftsman. Your workmanship is very high class! We totally understand your main goal with full respect. We are asking you, obviously if this possible, to share with us some of your knowledge. It would be nice if you show us some carving techniques or planking. It doesn't have to be a full log, though.

I will begin to lay out in this thread the process of building a Portuguese fishing boat "mulet". It was built in the area of Lisbon in the 17-19 centuries. With a description of how it was formed just such an artistic image of the model.

The first thing I would like to clarify is my understanding of what I am going to post here. I, of course, will post here photos of the model building process itself. But for me, handicraft techniques are secondary. For me, the primary is the artistic idea that is embodied by these craft techniques. Staying true to the original idea in every detail of the model, at every stage of construction is quite an interesting and fascinating task. And for me this work is the main one. This task defines for me the meaning of creating a model. I will try to demonstrate this understanding. We all work on the boards' machines very well. I do not want to make it the content of the photo report. I hope that the difficulties of translation have not destroyed the meaning of what I wanted to say.

Order fulfillment differs from the work of a simple modeller by the different composition of the tasks that these two modellers solve. When working without an order, as a rule, technical tasks over artistic tasks prevail. The modeller can devote a lot of time and effort to the development of technical skills, methods of processing materials, the invention of devices. This often gives him a lot of pleasure. He suggests that the ship itself is a beautiful structure. And if he reproduces it according to the drawings, to follow the model fashion of his time and the model community, he will build a knowingly beautiful model.

When working on an individual order, all these moments may also be present. More or less. But there is another point. For me it is quite important. The customer does not see the whole technical side of the model creation. He is not involved in the model building process. The customer does not enjoy the process. He enjoys the result. And for him it is important that the model is not the result of the modelist's trial and error, but the realization of the idea. This idea must be implemented consistently, totally and flawlessly. This idea includes technical and artistic components.

Especially clearly eu feature work on an individual order can be seen in the work on models of small coastal ships and fishing boats.

I began to build a model of the Portuguese mulet in 2011. The boat itself was built in the delta of the river Teju, district of Lisbon. There is a small town near Lisbon, they are called Seixal, it was the center of the construction of these boats. Today in this city enthusiasts are building this boat in full size ..

Why do I place in the theme of the boat images in the form of paintings and drawings? This is the moment that I want to explain before I start posting a photo of the model during the construction process. This moment is connected with the image of the ship or boat model, which is formed by the customer and the modeller at the beginning of the project. It may seem strange to you, but this image at the customer is almost always not associated with drawings and technical documentation. Typically, this image is formed by paintings and other illustrations that were made by artists, engravers, illustrators, cartographers.

for the customer, the mood that the model will create is important. And this mood does not depend only on the accuracy of the implementation of the technical document on which the model is built. I want you to look at this photo carefully. At first glance it may seem that we see the perfect work of the modeller with technical documentation. But for me impeccable in this work is the texture of the boards, which was created by the modeller. Take a closer look at this moment. It illustrates well what I want to say.

This boat attracted the customer unusual silhouette. The silhouette of the hull and sails. It was necessary to emphasize and reinforce this impression when building a model.
