Corel WASA (VASA)

When I was building the Corel HMS VICTORY cross section, I found the drawing of the hull planking to be very misleading. It may be a picky point but the drawing showed a few more planks than actually were installed because the drawn planks were narrower than the included wood. I could have bought strips that matched the width if the planks indicated or, very tediously, cut my own. I went with what I had been given and adjusted where i could. The hull turned out pretty good in the end after raising the sides to the "proper" height as shown in the Mamoli plans from my full size model (same scale). I will be faced with the same problem with the VASA once I complete the first base planking. Have any of you who build the Corel version found the same "problem?"

I respectfully disagree. The book contained drawings of each deck and I was able with the help of a local office supply comoanu tp produce copies in 1/72 scale with which I then marked each deck opening and the proper location of the foremast (forward of the location shown on the Corel plan sheet). The photos of the real ship were also helpful in providing ideas for additional corrections. I hope the second volume will be equally informative if I can ever get a copy through my local library.
Then I stand corrected. I guess it all depends on what one is looking for. The museum plans are very helpful with regard to layouts, and the internet is a glut of images as-built so those should be helpful as well.

That I agree with!! That large number of photos and build logs can be a bit daunting as well as being helpful and informative. I have already gotten a good collection of "reference" photos and comments.

Happy New Year!

Hi,

FYI: I also found this book to be super helpful. Here are a few of the 100s of images several in color as well. It may have already been discussed in this thread and I might have missed it.

One last comment -- Vasa II excellent content within this thread about the book. It was on my buy list during my Vasa build.
But it took several more years for the book to hit the bookstores. By then not needed as a reference.

Thanks for the info. I will try to get a copy through inter-library loan. I looked it up on Amazon and it is available in hard cover for a mere $964.85 new or $230 and change used. This may prove to be very valuable if I can get a copy.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get it through my local library on a loaner. This looks like a really good reference.

I am using the build guides for the De Agostini version of the VASA. Granted, these are speculative but they do add some color to the ship. I have read that its estimated that the actual ship had over 700 such decorations. Cornwall boats sells complete sets of figures but don't think I'll zealous. I haven't counted how many came with the kit. I might look into get one set but, as I suppose those of you who have build this ship, you, too,
have found the painting these figures is fun but it is very time consuming. (The brownish-red ones are primed and ready for painting.)

(Sorry for these being upside down. They are right-side-up on my PC. How do I get them turned?)

This new kit might be helpful as well.

Video shows colors of figures. If you can find the build instructions. Vasa Museum was fully involved in the design of this kit.
