CVE-30 USS Charger (1942)

email sent with some links.
For today, I've prepared the following drawings. The hull side bulges are not accurate because they were designed according to the "booklet general plans" for the CVL-25 and CVL-26. Therefore, it's too early to begin construction.

If you are interested, here is a drawing.
(It's weird, but the full size isn't loading.) :(

can you email it to me to see what is going on with the bulges?

So here is link to YouTube video which is part of old B&W series called Victory at Sea. This episode talks about problems convoys had in "the gap" where land based aircover didn't reach, and the new Escort Carrier, designed for small operations and support of carrier, it also talks about the capture of U-505 by taskforce.

I heard this story. It's about USS Guadalcanal CVE-60. Besides the video, a lot of photos of the U-505 were taken at the time.

Some time passed
For a long time I was involved in the "wooden" work of the flight deck CVE-30
The flight deck is still unpainted. I think it might be necessary to deviate a little from its correct color in order to preserve the color of the wood.

P.S. (I should have done this on the previous aircraft carrier СVE-68. Now I regret it. It makes me think about returning to the Casablanca project in the future.)

That's right, it will be the MS-22. The only thing is, I decided to leave the flight deck wood color in the future, like on the museum models.

Understandable. I love the way Measure 22 looks, but have myself lamented how it requires painting over the decks. Just a small quibble, and you can completely ignore this. The blue is a little too virbant for "Navy Blue," which is a little grayer in color. Regardless, it's a great looking build.

I also noticed you have the flight deck elevator in two positions. Will it be static, or do you plan to make it functional somehow?

You're absolutely right. I agree with you. But I can't find Navy Blue 5-H in large quantities in Russia. So I had to find a way around it. I also noticed that the color varied on different ships for some reason. It could be the quality of the photos or the retouching.
And I had to repaint the other color twice to get it to look like Haze Gray 5-H.

As for the elevator, I haven't decided yet what it will be. For now I have settled on the option with an open hangar and an airplane inside. But there is an option to make a second "lid" to leave it in the upper position. To periodically remove it for viewing the hangar.

Even in the US, it's not easy to find the right colors, especially in the quantity you need. When I worked on my 1/700 scale of the USS Missouri, I had to figure out how to mix the paints to get the necessary color. It was a pain to figure out. Colored photographs of WWII ships are very difficult to find, and they're universally recolored as they were only in black in white back then, so it's hard to know exactly how they looked. Heck, I think it was only about 20 years ago we figured out that the tops of the USS Arizona's main turrets would have actually been painted red. My point is, I was probably just being pedantic. But to allow me one final suggestion, reducing the glossiness with a matte finish I think would help.

But the grey looks about right. Regarding the elevator, I like that second option as it's gives you choices for the display, which is always more fun!

I noticed that the matte finish isn't realistic, and it also gets very dusty over time.
However, I have one more attempt to fix the situation before I fully assemble the case. So, I'm continuing to search for something similar to the Navy Blue 5-N. :)
PS Regarding the second elevator option: you're right, and I'll heed that advice.

Ah! Good point.
Anything darker may help, but it also looks great as is. Good luck in your search and I'll look forward to future updates.

To avoid wasting time, I decided to take the easy way out and return the ship to its appearance when it was commissioned in 1942.
This is because complaints about the blue paint have become more frequent. I only had one last chance to paint it, so as not to ruin the hull. So I decided not to tempt fate.
This means a different island configuration, shorter smokestacks, no "30" on the deck markings, two masts, and old aircraft.
