Hi,
Im using Deluxe materials modelite filler on my latest build. Its great for sanding, but seems very fragile. Does anyone have any way of making it more robust after sanding please?

thanks chaps.

I’ve tried many fillers over the years with varying levels of satisfaction. I haven’t used Deluxe.

My current favorites are Milliput and Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty. Milliput is sandable and solid and the ability to shape it with a damp knife is really useful. It takes a long time to dry but has a fine finish and is paintable. I use it as both a filler and, as it is shapeable, to fabricate small pieces.

To get a really fine finish, for instance on a solid wood hull prior to painting, I use the glazing putty. It dries quickly, sands easily, and accepts paint well. You can’t use it for anything that is “structural.”

I usually by my fillers from Amazon, but here is a photo for those that still browse aisles!

Another filler to use is Bondo body filler . It’s a hard finish, yet easy to sand

Forty years ago I lived next door to a guy whose hobby was rebuilding cars and used lots of Bondo. One day he was using it to patch some Masonite clapboard siding on his house because as he said “It was indestructible.”

At the same time I was building a model of a US Navy Steam Cutter that had a cylindrical boiler. I cast a slug of Bondo using a piece of PVC pipe as a mold. After removing it from the pipe, I turned the cured cylinder on a lathe to the correct diameter. 40 years later it looks like new.

Bondo: Good stuff!
