They say first impressions are everything. This was the first thing I saw when I opened the outer box which had no damage. Below is the part of the outer box that was adjacent to the torn piece above.


Disappointing to say the least, but this is what I received from Ages of Sail. If I had seen this on a shelf in the store I would not have purchased it, not without a discount.

Moving on...this will be photos with minimal text.

Besides the box, nothing else seems to have been damaged-that I have seen so far. The box did not have any type of clear plastic covering it. The lid wasn't taped nor secured in any other fashion, it lifted off easily.



Inside it is organized nicely.



Included is a small boat, a model in itself.




Next is the package containing the sails and flags.



The plastic boxes containing the anchors, cannon, blocks and miscellaneous other items.

Despite the initial disappointment this kit has grown on me, I can't wait to get started on it. I just wanted to put something up so others could see what this company has-I wasn't able to find much real information on Disar Models.

Latest during the building of the model you will find out - or when you build the second model you can compare between both......
But it is looking good what you showed to us - most important is that you have fun during and with the modeling

Some observations so far...

Look closely at the false keel. The slots for the bulkheads are quite deep, leaving little material. Pay close attention when fitting the bulkheads to the keel, if the joints are too tight one can introduce twist into the keel that on mine was very flat. Not meant to be a criticism of the kit, just something to be aware of.

Plywood and laser cuts are very good.

The planking material-overall pretty good. Some is excellent with straight grain parallel to the length of the board. This bent readily and evenly after soaking in water. Some is fair with grain that runs at an angle to the board. This had a tendency to splinter when bending around the bow, even after several hours of soaking in water. All were milled very well with square parallel smooth sides and no snipe. I experienced virtually no splitting while nailing, only a few when I got too close to the end (my own fault).

Instructions-so far adequate is the best I can give them. As a first time ship builder they are presenting a challenge to me. Photos are ok but there could be more with better detail. Written instructions are translated to English, sparse but to the point. I don't think they were intended for a first time builder but I am enjoying the challenge.

Another quick observation.

Some of the 1.5 x 6 x 500 mm planking broke while I was planking the hull. So I purchased some Limewood strips from Ages of Sail Shop on recommendation from Jason.

Comparing the boxwood in the kit and limewood...boxwood is easy to dent, large grained, a fair amount was diagonally grained, and brittle when bending, even after extensive soaking (2-3 DAYS). Limewood grain is tight, straight and parallel to the strip. Harder to dent yet easy to bend into shape.

This is some of the limewood after a couple of hours soaking in water, no heat.

Very little springback after drying overnight. This piece is 1.5 x 8 mm.

Now that I have something to compare I have to say the included boxwood is not great.

Knowing what I do now I would have spent the $15-20 extra and ordered limewood 1.5mm x 6mm strips for the planking when I ordered the kit. Kit includes 80 pieces 500mm long; 60 for planking and 20 for various other parts such as Wales and toprails.
