Eyesight going downhill. How do you cope?

For me with a beginning cataract the key word is light. This is the (partly) solution for me for less than 50 euros a combination of an aluminum strip (40 x 4 mm) screwed to the sides of my table and a strip of high quality white led light.
Impossible to work without it, even in broad daylight.
(Don't look at the mess on my table. I did clean up last month. :))

Brilliant (no pun intended) idea!

PS--what mess? thats neat compared to my space!

I had cataract surgery done a couple years ago for seeing far. I have a 40 watt led light above me and I went on Amazon and purchased a couple different pair of magnifying eye glasses. For $20 you get 2 pair. I got a 3.50 and 4.00 for up close work and they've been great. They fold up and fit in a neat little holder they come in.
IF your doctor suggests cataract surgery may help, you might be able to select from a range of replacement lenses. For example choosing a focal point of, say, 18 inches might allow you to build models without glasses but you'd need glasses to drive

I use a lot of light and an Optivisor. Actually, I have 3 of them with different focal lengths. The really strong magnifications can be dis-orienting until you get used to them.

===I have the same problem which waa solved with very strong liight on the work table plus a bifocal band shown above and on whixh i screwed on a strong led ligt. Magnifying band available from ModelExpo and led light from ch.ina.

Yeah some really good ideas there guys, some of which I’ll certainly be taking on.
I’m currently using my standard veri- focal’s and they are a nightmare when it comes to close work even when using my magnifying angle-poise lamp, so thank you for some good info.

I sympathise with your problems. I have macular degeneration and mild glaucoma, plus low-level cataracts in my right eye, and just the cataract in my left. Looking through my right eye alone is like watching a very poor quality video on an old CRT television. Happily the left isn't too bad

Another handy home made bit of kit from the old days - my Grandad had one anyway - is a “bench hook” mine is made from 5.5 mm ply 90mm x 90mm with 2 hard wood ‘hooks’ set at 90 degrees and glued to the ply 1 one side and one the other on opposing corners. See pic’s. The one in the pic’s I’ve just made the first one got worn out it was used so much.
It’s great to use instead of a vice, which can mark your wood.
Try it it’s great. IMG_5117.jpegIMG_5116.jpegIMG_5115.jpegIMG_5114.jpeg

At 83 I have similar troubles. Had cataract surgery and that helped a bit. Ended up with brighter light over my work yard, store bought gasses of all different magnifications and I switched to making larger scale ships. All together I don't realize that I can't see so well any more.

I use LOTS of lighting and an Optivisor View attachment 503225 You can get them at a decent price from Amazon.
The good thing about these rather than a single magnifier lens is that with these, you still have depth perception. You can also get different magnification on them.
I've tried a few different types and found these to be the best ones as well. The others give me head aches! I stuck a head torch on mine which is really great for lighting the area where you are working as it is pointing right where you look, the only thing you have to watch is that the visor does stick out a fair way and it is easy to forget and bump into the rigging work. Yep!
Getting old is fraught with challenges!! The key is to not let them defeat you!
Bright, Bright light ( the kind we hopefully walk towards when we pass) and those magnifying glasses that are shown on jplm's post with the Led lights - they are wonderful!! They come with five different attachable lens and are less than $20.00 on Amazon!!
I bought two, so there's a back up set. Will hopefully remember where I store them if I need them. I've acquired many double or triple items that way......
