In october 2017, I received a call from my friend and professional modeler Curro Agudo Mangas, from Badajoz, Spain ... They had made an important professional assignment consisting of a model of the Royal Galley of D. Juan of Austria in the battle of Lepanto
Of this galley there is an impressive 1: 1 reproduction in the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.
Curro Acute proposed that I take care of all the decoration of the galley and, - without a doubt in a moment of transient madness - I accepted.
I am going to put here the photographs and some notes that I keep from that process, obviously from the part of my work that was all the decoration.
I publish it in Spanish with an English version of Google translator, so I apologize for grammatical errors.

The Royal Galley was a Renaissance wonder. The galley itself was built in the Atarazanas of Barcelona and from there it was taken to Seville where it was decorated. It was undoubtedly the most luxurious vessel of his time for Don Juan of Austria, brother of Philip II of Spain and bastard son of Emperor Carlos V.
His description is well known because the decorator was Juan de Mallara, who published a book with a detailed description of the decoration of the gallery.
This book is freely accessible at:

But beware! It is Castilian of the XVI century ....

At the end of the 20th century to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the battle of Lepanto, the Spanish government made an extraordinarily accurate reproduction of it, which is the jewel of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.

The model was large, scale 1:20, more than two meters. There was another problem: the model was being built in Badajoz but my part, the decoration in Madrid, almost 500 kilometers away. So the coordination was basic. I would do almost everything on the plane and then I would move to Badajoz to adjust the pieces and do what could not be done remotely. Badajoz's team sent me the plans.

The decoration of the galley is mainly concentrated in the aft part, in the so-called "carroza". She occupied me 95% of the work, the rest of the decoration was distributed by the bow (spur etc) and by the "antecarroza"8733535216_9c5bb136fe_b.jpgcarrozapopa.jpgGalera-Real-de-D.-Juan-de-Austria.jpgmuseo-maritimo-de-barcelona-museu-maritim-la-galera-real-de-juan-de-austria-de-ornamentacion-c...jpgmuseo-maritimo-de-barcelona-museu-maritim-ornamentacion-dorada-en-la-galera-real-de-juan-de-au...jpgP7194375.jpgmuseo-maritimo-de-barcelona-museu-maritim-la-galera-real-de-juan-de-austria-cataluna-espana-ex...jpg.
I attach some photos of the gallery of the Museum of Barcelona

As for the documentation, the Badajoz team provided me with plans at the same scale of the model in order to perfectly coordinate the measures.
As for historical sources, I mainly followed Juan de Mallara's treatise - as well as some other documents of the 16th century, related to the original construction of the galley - and a set of photographs of the galley of Barcelona. I also helped myself with some bibliography regarding the reconstruction of the replica of Barcelona. This replica was built in 1971.
The original galley was the flagship of D. Juan of Austria in the battle of Lepanto, on October 7, 1571. During the battle he engaged in direct combat against the flagship of the Turkish fleet led by Ali Pacha, defeating the same and the Turkish admiral being killed. The galley was badly damaged as a result of the battle although it could return to the base of Messina where it sank due to the damage of the battle.
The captured Turkish galley fanal is currently in the monastery of Guadalupe (Spain)

I start with the photographs of the process of building my decoration.
Start with the outer starboard side of the float with the four mythological figures. These figures are sculpted in polymer clay and baked. At first I made them gold but at the direction of the owner I later changed them to polychromes like the museum's galley.

There were eight sculptures of mythological theme ... Ulysses, Prometheus, Minerva, Mars, Mercury, Hercules ... etc
For its design I followed closely the original of Barcelona and the description of Mallara

The next step was to reproduce the pictures on the sides.
They are painted with acrylic paint reproducing the original designs (to scale, of course) later, as will be seen, I added posters with the verses of the Aeneid that describes the treaty of the 16th century

The float carries six panels painted with allegorical mythological scenes to the triumphs of D. Juan, which are almost all taken from verses of Virgil's Aeneid, in Latin. As I said later I added as we will see, posters with the verses (or part of them, which allowed the scale).
These painted panels are accompanied by twelve sculptures, eight mythological on the sides and four representing the virtues in the sternIMG_20171111_194058.jpgIMG_20171111_194112.jpg

With regard to the paintings I must make some reflections.
There are no images of the original paintings of the sixteenth century, what does exist is a thorough description by Juan de Mallara. Based on this description, the paintings were reproduced in 1971.
I have copied those paintings from the gallery of Barcelona, with some minor modification also based on Mallara.

As an example (and for those who dominate Spanish and some notions of Latin) of Martinez Hidalgo's work on the reconstruction of the gallery of Barcelona a small fragment of Mallara and (of the corresponding Latin epigram) to give you an idea How is the description?
It is frankly difficult.

Magnificent work, and a noble tribute to the great Catholic knight and savior of the West. Don Juan and the heroes of Lepanto saved Italy from a Turkish invasion that might have carried to the heart of the Vatican. We must note that another great Spanish hero fought valiantly at this decisive sea-fight, none other than the great Spanish novelist Cervantes. Thank you for sharing your art.

Wow Wow Wow - amazing what can be (better by you) done
