Gerda III a Ship of Hope

I am a volunteer at the Mystic Seaport Museum and a member of the Mystic Sepaort Ship Modlers. We have on display a baot Ge4rda III that was used in WWII to rescue the Danish Jews from the Gestapo. Gerda is a light house tender that was able to get over three huundred Jews out of Demakr over to Sewden 15 people at a time. Hers is a remarkable story. There is a really good book that a good freind of mine who I built this model for wrote it is called "Henny's Boat" and tell the complete story of the Jews rescue. I am sad to say that my good fried Howard passed away from Kidney cancer a month ago. He was the care taker of Gerda at the seaport and I will miss him greatly. Congratulations on completing the project that commemorates a ship and people/Righteous Among the Nations who contributed together to saving Jews from the Nazis!!!
The result is beautiful and very impressive, thank you very much for sharing.
My condolences on the passing of your friend Howard, this special project is a fitting way to commemorate him.

Thanks for posting this and condolences on the passing of your good friend. The 2015 Nautical Research Guild Conference was held at Mystic, CT. Registration included admission to the Seaport. During our stay at Mystic I persuaded my wife to join me for an “in depth” visit. Maritime museums can be a hard sell for spouses uninterested in ships and the sea. Fortunately we happened on to Gerda. My wife was well aware and interested in the remarkable escape of the Danish Jewish Community from the Nazis and was surprised to see Grerda moored alongside the pier. Coincidentally that day at the Seaport featured a talk about Gerda by a staff member. It was a highlight of our visit.

im sorry the of Gerda was given to my good friend Howard who is the curator of gerda at the seaport. Howard passed away last month and his wife gave the model to a group that is raising money to restore her and get posetion of her. Gerda sank dock side last summer due to lack of hull maintenance. She has sinc been haul out and stored. Thye man that has possetion of gerda is Mark Gold who is part of a foundation to raise money for the purchase and restoration of gerda. the model will be used to tell gerda's story. Gerda was used during WWII to rescue Danish jews from the gestapo. She saced over 300 jews over a two week period taking 15 at a time to Sewden thru the german lines.
