Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Now you need to make only 19 more quoins..... ;)
These additions makes her stand out of the rest. The large cleats on deck from walnut is a lovely detail. These metal ones can be painted ofcourse, but this looks so much nicer! Well done Grant!

Good work - maybe you could use such a belaying pin insteed of a toothpick for the handle?
This is what I uese often for my quoins

Good morning.
Cabin guns : I modified the kit so these would be more in the hull. Inside the hull i made a support beam and a 1mm hole drilled in it. I had to add an extension to the gun and a 1mm dowel (toothpick ROTF ) to fit into the beam. I also bored out the front of the barrel.

I added a in haul line for the gun ports and some dummy hinges.

A few more decorations printed on my 3D printer as well.
Quarter deck stairs and platform : Grants design againRedface. Eish…
I added a railing to the platform. I can’t have my crew falling overboard ;). For these I used some decorative stanchions I had in my box of tricks and the railing is a 3mm walnut. I also neaten up the kit design by framing the platform with 0.5mm walnut. WIP….

Oh my lion decoration could be glued in place as well.
Stairs :
I made the kit stairs but these are just horrid…too bulky, thick etc . Redo.

Cannon :
I made sure I fitted the cannon before I made the platform for the stairs whew….

I will post the making and rigging of the cannons when I build the next one. On this cannon I did not rig the inner side - thankfully it was a mission getting it in under the quarter deck.
Not the best rigging on this one but it is not too visible. I am not going to use hooks on the cannons as with the 3mm blocks it all became overcrowded. Need to improve my neatness for the rest.
Brass fittings : I know….….…ROTF Looks cool though.
Cheers Grant
Awesome 3D printed decorations Grant! They really complement your stunning woodwork. You're making me want to buy a 3D printer.

I agree with the previous comments of members. She is just getting better-looking all the time. The advantage of Uwe's suggestion is that you will have 100% consistency among the quoins; the drawbacks are that the timeframe importing those to SA or expensive pricing.

Good evening Peter. Thank you kindly. If I had enough walnut and your skill I would have made all the metal parts wood as you did. It does give the ship more of a authentic feel to it.
Great work Grant! She’s looking very nice indeed. ;)
Thanks Dean

Good evening Uwek. Thank you for this. That does look so much better and as Heinrich pointed out will keep them consistent- something I never get right. The kit did provide some belay pins for this but were so out of scale (too large, like silly too large). Heinrich is also correct for me to bring these into SA is just too expensive. My next ship will cost me plenty as I do intend to build something accurate- no Grant fun creations., so plenty courier and import fees coming:rolleyes:.

Good evening Daniel. It quite fun doing the printing as well. I think once you start your own designs it could be a hobby on its own….PS don’t tell DeanROTF
Phew, just catching up with the latest activity. What a pleasure to see what you are doing.

Jan
Good evening Jan. Good to hear from you again :D. Thank you kindly .
Hi Grant. I just told @Ptèr Peter now that you guys with your Xebecs are starting to make me think!
Good evening Heinrich. You would enjoy these ships. They also make for cool looking models. Only one kit though- the Le Requin ZHL POF, the one with boxwood included. Also get the Ancre monogram as reference…..IMHO.
Hi Grant, once again I had a lot of catching up to do, fantastic work and the photo with your Xebec is just great.
Good evening Tobias. Thank you for your compliment. Coming from you it is a source of great encouragement. It was good to meet Heinrich that evening.

Cheers Grant

I am really enjoying the colours of your hull, very rich and earthy.

Belaying pins for quoin handles... now there's a thought?
Good morning Mark. Thank you. When I first started with the lime and Sapele veneer I was disappointed with the colour mix, but adding the black and red/brown it has worked for me. Still both Sapele and lime are not my favourite woods and I must research properly before buying my next ship. Still a while off. It takes for ever to make and rig these cannons and I have 19 to goo_O. Cheers Grant

Eish, 19 cannons to go? Good luck with that. It's like writing lines out at school; do you write the first word of each line, then the second, etc, or do you complete one whole line before starting the next line? Either way is painful ROTF. I had 16 guns on my Fly and only rigged 12 of them, the one's that would be visible on the open deck area as well as those partly hidden by the upper decks because you know you're always going to get that one guy who cranes their neck at an impossible angle to spot your unrigged cannon

Good morning Mark. That is a perfect analogy….writing lines at school. I tend to complete the whole line first. One cannon super fun, second cannon Hmmm, 3rd cannon Eish…..and so on….ROTF. I did rig one side of the “hidden” cannons however that “one guy” certainly could crane his neck and politely inform me I forgot to rig the other side….He would have a sore neck thoughROTF. Cheers Grant
