I am in the midst of preparing for a trip of a lifetime--an expedition to Antarctica in December. To prepare for this trip I have been reading dozens of books about the continent (I do tend to over prepare for these things), the best of which was Alfred Lansing's account of the famed adventure of Ernest Shackleton on the Endurance. So, just the other day I suddenly had the idea that it would be fun to build a model of his ship and that is why I am here.

Since I haven't done any modeling since I was a kid, I am really not sure where to start. From what I have seen, the Endurance might be a bit of a complicated build and I am thinking that it would be a good idea to start with something simpler to develop the necessary skills. I have seen several recommendations for the three ship starter kit by Model Expo, but I suspect there are other alternatives as well. From what I have seen so far, there does seem to be a wealth of information on this site, but if anyone has any specific recommendations or general advice, I would love to hear it. This looks like a great site and I feel lucky to have stumbled across it.

Welcome aboard. Yes, plenty of information available here and lots of great help from a load of wonderful people. I only began building wooden ships this year and have learned so much from reading build logs. My current build is the Endurance. You can look at my build log, link below and get an idea about this ship at least. There are many other logs that also could provide you with help.

Welcome to the forums !
The best place to start is to look at the forum section with specific information on getting started. Here is a link to help you find it:

That will give you all the information you need. Yes, you are absolutely correct that jumping right into the Endurance would likely be too much and you should start with some kits to teach you the skills you will need for this hobby. It's all listed in that thread I linked. :)

Again, welcome !

Welcome aboard.
Thanks so much. As I say, it looks like there is a ton of information here. I took a look at your Endurance log and it looks really great and you seem to be coming along nicely. Another worry of mine is where in the hell am I going to find the time to do this!!

Thanks, Jeff. I will certainly look at that link.

Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing how your Endeavor build is coming along. I'd like to do that one day, as well.

Hello Somberg!

I believe you should build a simpler model before tacking the HMS Endurance so you can develop skill in hull planking, detailing, and rigging. It's almost guaranteed that your second model will be 150-200% better than your first one. Giving yourself time and practice to get these skills, reading lots of build logs, and collecting a few books on ship models and sailing ship design. This will keep the process of learning fun and prepare you for building HMS Endurance with enough skill to ensure you are satisfied with the results.

Your next step is choosing which model to develop your skills on. I personally like galleons, So I would recommend Artesania Latina's Spanish galleon San Francisco II. Other like smaller vessels and boats, and others would recommend the Model Shipways series of kits for beginners. It depends on personal preference. because sailing ship model take such a long time and have lots of tedious work, choose something that appeals to you personally. Go to the link that Corsair provided above and read the posts. Looking for a place to start building is a commonly discussed thing on our forum.

Model of the HMS Endurance ship from the manufacturer OcCre - light and easy to build. A completely normal choice for a starting model. You will quickly gain the necessary skills and experience. But keep in mind that the model is very simplified, it has low accuracy and reliability (conformity to the prototype). This is the manufacturer's policy, to make models for beginner modelers. I strongly recommend this model as a first!
