Guillows P-38 Lightning

Hi Dean

I am new here. I have been building models for the last 45 years though so not a newbie to the hobby. I am from South Africa where we do not have access to the model resources available in Europe and the USA. I got used to a lot of scratchbuilding.

I converted a Guillows Giant Scale Stuka to R/C towards the end of last year and also covered it in balsa before using heat shrink covering.

We have one proper hby shop here is Cape Town(don't laugh!) and they had an opened Guillows Giant Scale P38 tucked away in the back of the store. So I purchased it for the equivalent of $54 during November last year. Having started on the framesIi started searching the internet for build of the model and came across your build. You mastery is quite evident and shows years of dedication.

I saw the comments about the interior and put aside the frames and using the cardboard mock-up template and did a scratch built cockpit that would pass casual scutiny. The photo was hastily taken with the laptop camera, but I will take a proper one later.

I will eagerly follow your build updates...

I also add a pic of the Stuka I built.

Great build

You have a very nice and impressive collection, Dean.
Thank you Adi. It’s growing…lol. I have two WW1 airplanes to build in 1/72 scale and I have six more WW2 airplanes in 1/72 scale on the way. Even at 1/72 scale I’m running out of room. But I am probably going to move some of my cars off shelves and make room for more airplanes! ;)

This is my current spreadsheet of WW2 aircraft, anything highlighted in yellow has been built and is currently displayed. If it’s not highlighted, that means I have not built the kit yet. On the qty of the P-51D and Focke-Wulf FW109, they show 1 more than what I have displayed because I have a kit of each that is not completed.
I will be adding a Dehavilland Mosquito since I am now going to start adding bombers.
I originally started with fighters only, now I am starting to add torpedo bombers, hence the Dauntless and Avenger…and the new addition of the Japanese B5N2 “Kate”. And I will also be adding the B-17 bomber and others.
I have WW1 and fighter jets models as well, but my favorites have always been from WW2.
In an effort to have a well rounded WW2 collection, I am continually searching for and adding new additions.

I'd like to see and read more about the Guillows P-38 Lightning build. I built that plane (stick and tissue) 30+ years ago. Interested to see how the entire covering with 1/32" balsa ends up! I've tried a Guillows several times with a bit of balsa covering. It never ended well so I am excited to see these tips!

I will get back to it soon…I have not had any problems thus far.
