Guillows P-38 Lightning

I may end up boring some of you, but I am working on building a few 1/72 scale airplanes before I get back to the ship and the P-38.
I have gone down the rabbit hole recently! ROTF
This is my current WW2 collection that has grown recently…

The upper shelf will be finished (9 aircraft) with a P-51D Mustang.
The second shelf will be finished with a F4U Corsair in navy blue and a Grumman Bearcat.

The third shelf will be finished with the addition of a Hawker Hurricane, B5N2 Kate, Ki 43 Hayabusa and a Ki44II Shoki.

I will start the 4th shelf with a Dehavilland Mosquito. And eventually I will add the B-17G.

Moving on…

My WW1 collection now has 4 airplanes in 1/72 scale and I will be adding a Sopwith Camel, Bristol F2B and a Spad XIII for now. Still searching for more kits to add.

My fighter jet collection is small too and will be added to soon. There are so many to chose from! Did I say I like airplanes?

And finally… I started my 1/72 Grumman Bearcat …

I am leaning towards the yellow version for something different. Navy blue is too common. ;)

Hello Dean,

Excellent work on your aircraft. Your painting skills are outstanding. I will assume you airbrush all of your work. Just curious, what type of airbrush do you use? Right now I am using an old Badger and looking to upgrade to a better airbrush.

Thanks! At the moment I don’t have an airbrush. I used to have a Paasche VL, which I loved. Press down for air and pull back for paint.
Anyway, most of my work these days is with a brush. You can usually get away with it on the smaller airplanes. But I am going to get another air brush. ;)

Yesterday and today I spent a lot of time finishing the Grumman Bearcat. I decided to go with the navy blue after all. I brushed the paint on using airbrush paint, because it’s thinned out well already and brushes on good with minimal to no brush marks. I then did a wash and some dry brushing on the panels…mainly on the wings. It’s subtle, but shows up good in bright light. The decals were a lot of work. Overall I am happy with it.

And on the shelf (middle) on the front left next to the Wildcat.

I may have to take a break soon from the 1/72 scale aircraft. The nice thing is they can be built in about 2-3 days! ;)

Great work on your Bearcat. I have two 1:72 WWI biplanes waiting to be started. I have been intimidated by the small size.

Thanks. Yes I just built the Nieuport 27 this week, and it’s definitely tedious! I am waiting on some EZline I ordered so I can do the rigging to finish it. ;)

Your airplane builds have inspired me to take a look at 4-5 boxed planes I've picked up over the years. They are large scales. Even bought a compressor and airbrush that I have never used either.

Looking on my local FB page I couldn't believe how many small scale planes, in the boxes are available for $10 or less.

Thanks, that’s great! I have 1/48, 1/32 and 1/16 scale airplanes to build. But the majority are 1/72 scale because that way I can fit more airplanes in the same space! But as you say, you can get quite a few 1/72 scale kits for cheap! ;)

Yesterday evening I started on the Hawker Hurricane.

The cockpit area is very basic, no instrument panel… so I just painted black and put some white dots to represent gauges. ROTF.

Then I started on the landing gear bay…

Best thing I ever did was put shelves in my hobby room closet for supplies. It keeps my desk uncluttered and it’s easier to find things! ;)

Also, the majority of my collection is model kits I have built. Every now and then, if I find a diecast I really like, I will add it. Usually they lack good detail, but some are actually very nice.

Like this Focke-Wulf, it’s very well done. But I always add detail, like the panel lines, and I did a wash on the wheels and landing gear, etc.

I also just received a Japanese B5N2 Kate. It was a torpedo bomber. It needed some help, so I took off the torpedo and repainted it, and I did some dry brushing to add weathering and also did some panel lines.

So these are two rare examples of me adding a 1/72 diecast and modifying to look closer to a model. I prefer building a model. But occasionally I find a diecast that is suitable to add. ;)
