Guillows P-38 Lightning

The Bare Metal experiment… so I purchased the thin aluminum sheet with adhesive backing. It is so thin you can tear it easy and it’s hard to get off the paper without damaging. So very delicate to work with. I decided to cover a few panels of a plastic piece with it to see what it looks like.
As you can see it does look like chrome. So I painted the other panels with aluminum paint.
I also put the modified part next to the old parts.
Impressions…I definitely think the old parts are too dark! At the very least, I will be painting them with the aluminum paint. But I think I will use the shiny real aluminum sheets to do most of the pieces and most likely the entire airplane. However I am leaning on mixing the paint and real aluminum to make it more interesting. Time will tell. But it looks promising, but will be very expensive using a lot of sheets of the Bare Metal.

That bare metal foil looks pretty darn sharp, Dean! I'm sure a go-fund-me page will cover the costs! BTW LOVE your airplanes! That thumbail sized cockpit is amazing! And no decals for the instrument panel? Way to go!

Blessings.
Chuck

Thanks Chuck! This airplane is a dedication to my mom, so I will do what I feel is best visually regardless of cost. ;)
But I love your idea of a go-fund-me!

Bare Metal part two…
I finished adding the aluminum sheet panels to the part for the P-38 nacelle. I left the panels around the exhaust turbo aluminum paint for contrast.
Then I placed it on the airframe to get an idea of how it’s going to look.
I have to say I’m so excited that I have to get back to the P-38 build as soon as I finish my P-43 Lancer 1/72 scale airplane. ;)

Those sheets look stunning! I think worth every penny you spend on em.
I have to agree Daniel, it may increase my cost around $200-300, but worth every penny for the end result.
It is so thin, I am sure paint and sanding will be required prior to covering the balsa wood, to ensure a very smooth surface to prevent any wood grain from appearing in the metal. ;)
The Bare Metal foil and your attention to detail has turned out great.

Bill
Thanks Bill, this is going to be a rewarding project once done.

I was excited to find the Republic P-43 Lancer model kit…
IMG_7043.jpeg

…because it was the version prior to the P-47 Thunderbolt…

I am equally excited to have found and ordered a Curtiss P-36A Hawk model kit…
IMG_7045.jpeg

…as it was the aircraft prior to the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk…

So my WW2 collection becomes more complete with each new aircraft. And that’s why I am building them. ;)

Hi Dean

I used a heatshrink aluminium covering that came out very well. It takes riviting very well. I will post a pic of the wing.
